BBHN Asterisk on Raspberry Pi and Cisco 7940G SIP VOIP Phones
KF5JIM's videos are excellent for setting up voip phones on the BBHN. Recently purchased 2 Cisco 7940G phones off of Ebay -- SIP 8-12 firmware loaded.
PBX server is up and operating, http link to PBX server works and server is up and 1 extension setup. However, the VOIP http link does not bring up the Grandstream Device Configuration screen. If I cannot gain access to this screen, will the phones fail to register on the BBHN? Loaded the firmware and config files from your link to the TFTPboot folder and configured them per instructions. Question: does the OS...txt file and the XMLDefault file need to point to the P003.. or P0S3 firmware file?
Did factory reset, plugged phone into a BBHN Node, but phone never indicated is was configuring the VLAN or configuring IP. Set TFTP Server to PBX server IP but phone did not complete the registration process. Any ideas of what to look for? Thanks, Dave Bury KC4JIR

DIY - Portable Mesh Node with VOIP and Wifi
So, just for grins I used the links in your web page to see what these items cost. The Amazon items came to about $540 as of today. With the battery and EMT conduit the total would be around $650 per node. Some of the items (connectors, wire) can be used for multiple nodes but I would estimate the per node cost to still be at least $600.
Very cool solution. Thanks for sharing it.

Very cool. I read your web page about this. Do you have any idea of the total cost of the node done this way?

There exist several competing mesh networking schemes, all using different blends from a common pool of open source software.
You can absolutely set up a part 15 mesh network, with multiple users, by downloading router firmware from one of the other mesh networking projects.
I absolutely agree that as currently implemented all BBHN devices should be treated at part 97 devices.
I was simply pointing out the _utility_ of part 15 operation and suggesting being open to the _option_ of part 15 operation using the BBHN software base. Perhaps this is as simple as a community announced 'part 15' SSID to use in place of the default SSID.
I suspect that any sort of 'part 15' feature would have to prevent over the air connections to part 97 devices. Using a different SSID would automatically prevent these connections.
On the call sign issue: I tend to agree with kx4o, however I have followed internet discussions arguing the other side, including one which included a response from a low level FCC official, stating that if you use your call sign you are implying a part 97 operation. I don't think there will be a certain answer unless there is an enforcement action one way or the other. In other words, what _I_ think is reasonable is different from what others think is reasonable, and it hasn't been to court. IMHO using a part 97 call sign on a part 15 operation _should_ be okay, but that using "/part15" would be more likely to be accepted should there ever be an enforcement action, and a trivial extra 'burden'.

Utah Mesh Node Map
A new map is available that shows many of the mesh nodes across the state of Utah. The map can be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/jfvqx6s. Mesh operators can add a new node or manage existing nodes via the map as well. For details on how to do this expand the map description in the upper left corner of the map when it first loads.
You may be asking why this map was created. After all, there is an existing map on the Broadband Hamnet web page. The reason for creating this map is:
-
While basic maps are great, just knowing the location of a node does not give mesh operators the information they need to connect to a node. They need additional information like the SSID, where a directional antenna is pointing, frequency, etc. This map provides that information and more. I want to see mesh succeed in Utah. I don't believe that can happen if we as mesh operators don't know where the mesh nodes are and how to connect to them. I like the idea of having a map that is specific to Utah rather than covering the entire United States and in some cases the world.
So there you have it. My hope is that this map will prove useful to mesh operators around the great state of Utah. We all know a map won't do anyone any good if no one knows it exists. With that in mind, please tell any mesh operators you know about this map. |

Hi Graham, I was just notified of a different forum post to the one above but never mind. Please contact me on the BBHN.Event.2016@gmail.com address and I will get back to you promptly with what information I have. I need a private e-mail address for you to avoid cluttering the forum, hi! I will be happy to supply mine in return. 73 de Ted, G4ELM - Hampshire. |

HSMM-Pi
Hello, A couple of us have been trying to get some nodes going and to run a service or two on the HSMM-Pi branch of BBHN. We have 4 working nodes, but getting a service going is hampered by lack of documentation. Judging by the lack of people talking about running a service on it, I'm not sure if anyone has actually done it. We are looking for a VOIP service for chat and file transfer etc. Has anyone else tried HSMM-Pi and got a service working? Any thoughts, ideas or help much appreciated. Graham |

Can't get to the meeting, but would like to know what happens or comes from it. I've been trying to get an HSMM-Pi network going and it would be nice to find out if anyone else is using it. Getting the nodes to see each other is the easy part; getting a service to work is less successful so far.
