Firmware Upgrade Failure Linksys WRT54G v.4
I have a "stock" Linksys WRT54G v.4 that I am trying to convert to Hamnet. (Ok, I'm a newbie who bought two units with bbhn installed and also found two others to convert myself) So far I THINK I have been following the firmware installation instructions. I selected and downloaded this version of the .bin file: bbhn-3.1.0-wrt54g-2.4-squashfs.bin When I logged into the router and started the update process things looked good for a few seconds after clicking "Upgrade". Unfortunately, I soon received a message indicated firmware upgrade failure. I have tried multiple times with multiple downloads of the .bin file but never get beyond the failure notice. I admit I haven't looked extensively through the archives of the forum so if anyone knows of a previous solution or has a solution....probably an obvious error on my part......I sure would appreciate your guidance.
Thanks, Dave K4DPF

More Noobie Questions...
As for causing issues with other networks, that is always a possibility. Do an occasional scan to see if there are other networks on channel q. If so, you could work with the owners to move them.
As for multiple nodes near each other, they should integrate as part of the mesh and work together.
Having multiple radios and at multiple locations comes down to monitoring and control. Can you monitor the traffic on the nodes, and remotely shut them down if anything is non-compliant. This is the same as owning a repeater on a site other than your normal station location--you need to be able to monitor and control it, both for non-compliant activities and also in the case of malfunctions that cause interference. At least be able to monitor activity and ask your parents to pull the plug if needed.
You also need to be able to monitor and control nodes, and other automatic ham radios, at your home. The same rules apply--for example, if an APRS Digi locks up on transmit you need to be able to detect that and turn it off. (Yes, I have had this happen and subsequently set the radio to use a timeout timer. And I monitor more closely now.)
My 2 cents worth, refunds available on request.

WRT mesh status page update
OK, for those who still run WRT's, I have added a little widget to the MESH STATUS page that you can download and just copy onto your node(s). What it does is counts the number of remote nodes and current neighbors and puts a (##) next to the Column header. For example
Remote Nodes (147) |
| ETX |
| Services |
Current Neighbors (4) |
| LQ |
| Services |
This makes it easier to count when you are connected to a tunnel(s) and have lots of remote links. (and YES.... those are actual numbers, just copied from one of my nodes.... MANY tunnels at work here )
http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/download/applications/mesh
THIS ONE ONLY WORKS ON WRT's ! I have yet to craft it for UBNT. If someone would like to take a shot at it, its only PERL... If you get a copy working on UBNT, email it to me @ Jim@k5ktf.com and Ill get it up here for all. You would need to copy the file linked above (or the code displayed on screen when you click on the link) into /www/cgi-bin/mesh on your node. Its that simple. 73 & Happy Meshing! KTF

Just a note mentioning that the Ventura County hams are "Meshing" around, also.

A better antenna is a far, far better choice than an amplifier in the majority of cases.

Can hsmm-pi be changed to bbhn-pi ?
I have a pocket case that holds 8 micro-SD cards and have just collected a bunch. On my older models I use a low-profile adapter to run a micro in the SD slot.
Any time I try something new on a Raspberry Pi I start with a fresh install of the latest Raspbian. I stick with Raspbian because there are so many forums and users that it is easy to find answers when you need them.
I have several 4GB Micro-SD cards that I format and install Raspbian. That way I can just add whatever package I want to play with. Since 4GB and 8GB cards are so cheap now, I don't see any reason to complicate things by putting too much on them.
This also means I can swap from one project to another just by swapping the card.
I also try to keep hardware (USB hub, wifi adapter, etc.) the same on the several RPi set ups that I keep around to play with.
My $.02, refunds available on request...

How is LAN Subnet Chosen?
Someone out there must know the algorithm used to calculate the 10.x.x.x LAN IP addresses on a BBHN node? We know the Wi-Fi IP address is calculated from the router MAC; last 3 segments used to do a HEX to decimal conversion for each of the last 3 octets. But the LAN IP addresses seem to be something of a mystery. Clearly, since OLSR propagates BBHN LAN IP addresses to other BBHN mesh nodes, all LAN IP addressing has to be as unique as the Wi-Fi addresses are, so there are no (or virtually no) IP address conflicts. Anyway, just curious what that algorithm is that is used to create the LAN IP addresses for a BBHN node? Anyone?? |

I hope to have two nodes up here (fn20hd) in the next few weeks. Who else in the Philly area has nodes running and where are you located? Did you add your node to the map?? --Ed |

Cool, thanks Wil! It looks like I'll need one with an rp-tnc connector. I heard that there is a lot of loss associated with the coaxial cables... Should I just try to find one with the shortest coax? Douglas, yeah I'd definitely like to be on the list. I'll shoot you an email. |

I'd be interested in joining the group as well. I have a Wrt-54GL ready to flash, but have to use the stock antennas for now. I'm in desert ridge. Any chance of me connecting to the mesh? |
