Topic : Solar/Battery power parameters

Regarding the common WRT54G(X) platforms, does anyone know the minimum 12v solar panel size to maintain use with a 12v gel-cell?

Living in the desert southwest, we have lots of sun.

Some of these nodes could be put in great strategic locations where there is no power.

Any ideas?

So I have five mesh nodes setup, and was able to use my Asterisk VOIP system with them.  Amazing!  Plug & Play!

I can see this being a HUGE benefit for emergency comms.

If this was done, maybe someone could then figure out how to setup a page that shows real time locations. Kinda like the APRS stuff does. Just a thought.

We need a programmer on this. The byonics unit does all the work, and feeds the stream serially.

Yep it would be well suited to keeping tabs on all the nodes online. Once in the firmware, all that would be needed is 3 hookups into the router. power, ground, and data.

I am having trouble locating the IRC server software to load onto the node. The guide says "ngircd_18_mipsel.ipk" and I cannot find that download anywhere.

Yes, if you look on the site under one of the Documentation links, Rusty has found and instructed how to install NGIRCD onto a node (doesnt even have to be one of the phat nodes with big ram/flash).

Then you just connect to it with mIRC or whatever IRC client you want (the mozilla plugin is flaky though--use a real stand-alone client for best results).

If the op setup the service advertising, you can just click the link and it opens and connect the IRC client automagically.

A neighbor of mine and I were playing around in IRC one night and he sent me a test PDF of 6.39MB in 56 seconds via the IRC setup. Pictures (50-100KB) were in less than a second. KTF

Thanks. I saw that two "n" models were listed on the HSMM-MESH firmware listing. wrt150n and wrt300n-v1 so guess I became confused. (A state I seem to be in of late, hi hi). Picking up two more G linksys next week for the first leg of the club's link to it's radio site, 5 air miles away. Appreciate all the help to date, adios.

The more I think about this, the better I feel about it. I think this is a "must have" option in the firmware. It would make collecting nodes after a deployment a piece of cake! A roving node on a vehicle could update it's position, node maps could be automatically generated, it could help with seeing propagation, etc. If I knew enough about programming, I'd do it. But seeing as how most of the common linksys stuff we're using for HSMM-MESH has serial ports, it should be a simple matter.

IRC meaning Internet Relay Chat? I believe you would have to have your own IRC server somewhere one the mesh if you're not connected to the Internet.

See THIS post!  THey are using IRC!

No "N" routers are supported at this time. -Glenn KD5MFW

I have been successful for the club on getting the WRT54G v4 to work. (Had to bleed a bit).

The group wants to get a few more for its first MESH point to point with an AP.

The question was raised, does (for example), using a wrt15n as opposed to a 54g offer any advantage?

Thanks.......

Hi Wes,

I am sorry but I don't understand your reply. Both of your links have ellipses in them so they cannot be followed. One looks like you were intending to show the link to the CQ article that I recommend be removed from the site.

Perhaps you could correct the links and explain your point in posting them?

It was a good Hamfest with a lot of nice things. I had some interest in the Mesh node. I do like to try to show the project off and try to get others interested.

Hi Bill and Dave,

Thanks much for that information. It looks like some of the feedback I got on QRZ was wrong. I am glad to see it is on solid footing and this doesn't warrant a request for ruling.

If I may make a suggestion, it would be to remove the reference to the CQ article that leaves one to infer encryption is used and somewhere make a clear statement that encryption is not used - perhaps in the design philosophy or the getting started section. Just a thought.

Thanks again. - Glenn DJ0IQ and W9IQ

HSMM-MESHTM does not use encryption.  Every layer of the network and every protocol is open and unencrypted.  Authentication is used when logging into the administrative interface of a mesh node, as it should be.  No other form of "obfuscation" is used.

So that looks to me as if encryption is NOT enabled by default, but can be used if desired, although you'd have to set it up manually since there is no setting in the web interface.

I've got a NS loco M5 I'm willing to beta test with. Let me know.
