Thanks, and thanks for not pointing out my obvious error - I meant of course 150mW and 75mW, at least that is what the firmware claimed. |

Power Setting
Hi Brad,
If you go to SETUP and login, on the main screen (in the ACTIVE SETTINGS category, under the RX ANTENNA and the TX ANTENNA settings (by default =Diversity)), it shows TX POWER, and by default is set to max 19dBm, or 79mW. You CAN crank it down from there if need be (like when driving an amp, you should take it down under 5dBm to keeps the spurs and spokes from happening).

Current firmware does not appear to support adjusting the power level. I have a WRT54G v2.2 that I loaded with Tomato and that software gave me the ability to adjust the power level all the way up to 1.5W. Of course I kept it to .75W so as not to overheat it. Are there plans for (or possibly already available) a way to adjust the power level of the WRT54G under HSMM-MESH? Brad. |

Resetting a password on a mesh node
one of my nodes will not accept my common password I set for all 4 of them. So, how does one reset the password? I can ssh into the node and set that password, but it looks like the ssh password and the web password are two different passwords
thanks

Got it fixed now. It seems when you change this setting, the IP Address changes to 172.27.0.2 I was able to login and change the setting back. I need to do some more reading!! |

That's exactly what I was thinking! For point to point you could use directional and microwave, and for broader coverage, the others. I wonder if one donated to the HSMM_MESH development team might help. I'll chip in some $ I assume they need two.

Using a WRT54GL and WRT54G both with 0.4.2. Had two nodes N0PGH-TEST1 & N0PGH-TEST2 that saw and communicated with each other just fine. Laptop connected to each one. I was exploring the software on N0PGH-TEST2 and in Setup changed the node type from Mesh Node to Mesh Access Point. I saved changes without thinking. Now I cannot get an IP Address. I've tried resetting, 30-30-30 reset, etc. I've also tried manually setting laptop address to 172.27.0.5 and pinging the router at 172.27.0.1 with no luck either. I can still connect via wireless to HSMM-MESH or N0PGH-TEST2 on this router but do not get an IP Address there either.
N0PGH-TEST1 is still working fine...
Any ideas??? Brian

Interesting. Looks like they also have several other Amateur Radio options. Since this is all networking I am guessing that a version of HSMM-MESH could be adapted to these boards as they support dd-wrt and OLSR.
The 900mHz version could be something to look into. You would have a bit less issue with obstacles then with the 2.4gHz yet still have quite high transfer speed over the 70cm option.
I am thinking a mix of two or three frequency systems to help provide maximum coverage. |

Getting Started
A lot of this project entails a bit of "self-starting", I can see. Ham radio, being a tiny sub-segment of the population, containing an even tinier sub-segment interested.
However, what exactly are you looking for help with? Configuration? Network design? Antenna set up?
[ve3tsa 2012-03-20- 15:19:17]: Doesn't anyone have any comments or suggestions? I am looking for some help to demonstarte this to our group, what did you do when you started out? Sorry but I'm not a computer networking guy so there are lots I don't know. Any information/links would be appreciated .... 73

Why not just drop Mesh Potatoes into the network, and use the HSMM as communication backbones between sites? |

WRT54G V1 Installation Problem
W5LMM, Thanks for your reply, I've tried the Linksys file and get the same error. I'm not familiar with TFTP, so I'll look into it. I did find something on the DD-WRT forum which mentioned plugging the router and computer into an ethernet hub and trying to flash. I'll give that a try and then look at TFTP if it doesn't work. Thanks again. Michael N4MJR |

WOW!
This is pretty darn cool! I wonder if it can replace a linksys radio... http://kb9mwr.blogspot.com/2012/01/doodle-labs-dl435-30-reports.html |

Mesh Access Point Security
I set up one node to be an access point and lan to lan the AP to connect to the mesh. That works fine. I can scan the wireless devices on my laptop and I do see the AP and can connect to it and then on to the mesh just fine. problem is the AP is open where anyone with a wireless laptop, cell phone etc can connect to it. I did set up the password in the AP's setup screen. Is there some other way of securing the AP? I don't want to leave this open to just anyone. Thanks
