Doing my part to improve HSMM-Mesh availability in LA
I have my node set up. It's a Ubiquiti Nanostation in a window of my 14th floor apartment in downtown LA (facing east). Unfortunately it doesn't see any node but my other one (a linksys with improved antennas). On the upside I was able to connect through my two nodes at about 9 miles. Going to play around with my raspberry pi 2 and netbook linux server and see what services I can come up with for the node.
Hoping to connect sometime, Anne

I'm not sure how we ended up with 2 posts, maybe an admin could delete one, anyway, I got BBHN 3.1.0 installed, used TFTP to reflash and been working Fb since, thanks for the help. |

It looks like the FCC noticed their comments, and are addressing them: https://www.fcc.gov/blog/clearing-air-wi-fi-software-updates |

Linksys WRT54GL Re-use
I am slowly replacing Linksys with 'Ubi' gear. I would like to use the Wrt54gl for another purpose, does anyone know how I might format it, re-flash it with DD-WRT? Ive tried uploading but the current hamnet firmware wont allow it. Ive also tried uploading Linksys firmware in a two step process to getting DD WRT on there, but no joy. Any ideas on how I could format the router or remove the hamnet firmware from it? Any help appreciated. Thanks 73

just a guess, but you probably need to UNCHECK the "Keep Settings" option in Barrier Breaker as the BBHN firmware that you are downgrading to is Kamikaze (which does not support sysupgrade/"keep settings") |

Can't be done. If you are talking communicating with the Ubiquiti 900 MHz products. Those use spread spectrum, what you are talking about is a narrow band voice radio. Same bands, but totally different modes/protocols. Its like a CW radio talking to SSB on the same band, no go. |

It was me. I probably did a submit that many times trying to get the format correct, then tried uploading a screen shot image that wouldn't take, so ended up with an external link to the image. |

Joe,
Just a quick question, How many times did you edit this post?
I am just asking because I have received about 5 emails in my inbox about your post and although some were different, at least 2 of them were identical.
I was just thinking that this might mean there was something amiss with K5KTF's email server for this site.
I just thought I would put this out there.

Hi, I tried the suggestion, It appears that the new firmware is loading, it reboots, but it keeps coming back to the LUci interface, the ip address is still the static 192.168.1.1, the router seems to work though, which in itself is a positive, just not BBHN ... 73
p.s. I have a serial console installed using putty to monitor

BBHN Intranet speeds?
KTF, All, OpenWRT based 802.11 adhoc mode usage that we are running OLSR on top of in BBHN is only 802.11a and max possibility is 54Mbps of raw protocol bits back and forth. One would have to go to 802.11n modes to obtain the 40Mhz channels or MIMO dual spacial streams to be able to achieve a higher rate. OpenWRT (that BBHN is on top of) only has these rates implemented in 802.11 AP mode (not used by MESH) for atheros ath9k chipsets in Ubiquiti hardware.
Here's an example of the rate control algorithm under OpenWRT (Barrier Breaker newer version) of the rates in use from a live node. This node is finding 5.5Mbps as the optimal rate to use. Note max of 54Mbps. This is a NSM2. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2bEy75HhwWhRFVVRU56akNzWDg/view?usp=sharing Joe AE6XE at arrl.net |

BBHN Intranet speeds?
Hello All!,
I am just wondering what kind of speeds I could expect to see on a BBHN Intranet network.
If I had, say, two nodes on the roof of two very tall buildings that were about 30 miles away from each other but were just about line of site from each other when you were on the roof, what data speeds could I expect to see between the two nodes?

I'll look into those but the whole reason for the radio is it could communicate with the 900 Mhz gear. If it can't be done then so be it II just have ideas pop into my head. |

To those who think the WRT*** should be supported forever... How many of you build your own radios? Things change, some times you just have to move on. Sure, you can still have your WRT***. But, if, like building your own rig, that tweaks your fancy, you'd better learn how do do it on your own and not expect others to do the heavy listing for you.
There, got that off my chest. |

If it already has OpenWRT loaded, use the TRX file at the top.
BIN files are for when it is still in stock Linksys firmware.

OpenWrt Barrier Breaker 14.07 / LuCI
Hello all, recently I aquired a WRT54GS V2 router. The router has the firmware OpenWrt Barrier Breaker 14.07 / LuCI installed on it, but I thought I would upgrade it to the latest BBHM firmware. This router has the LUCI interface with the details as follows: Firmware Version OpenWrt Barrier Breaker 14.07 / LuCI Trunk (0.12+svn-r10530) Kernel Version 3.10.49 So I tried to upgrade the firmware to BBHN using the web interface: Flash new firmware image Upload a sysupgrade-compatible image here to replace the running firmware. Check "Keep settings" to retain the current configuration (requires an OpenWrt compatible firmware image). Using this .bin file bbhn-3.1.0-wrt54gs-2.4-squashfs.bin but it was not successful with this message. The uploaded image file does not contain a supported format. Make sure that you choose the generic image format for your platform. Further reading on http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/linksys/wrt54g
states Using LuCI
-
Select Administration in the top right corner
-
Choose the System > Flash Firmware tab
-
Click Browse and navigate to the firmware (it must be a .trx file) you wish to flash to
-
Click 'Upload image'
So, am I able to use the trx file listed on the site, it however states that it is for an upgrade to an existing mesh node.
Any thoughts would be appreciated..thanks

If you are talking with TNC, then why spend $400 to be on 900 MHz? You can do the same with VHF/UHF radios. I thought you'd at least be talking a radio designed for data.
19.2kbps UHF MDT radio:
