900 Mhz radio idea.
Hello, I was researching used radios last night and noticed an abundance of somewhat cheap 900 Mhz radios. I was wondering if there was a way to use these radios which most of the time extend into the 5-15W power range. I was thinking use something like a RPi with the TNC Pi. Can this be done? Has anyone done it? I think using more power with a better propagating 900Mhz band has many useful benefits. |

Broadband-Hamnet Club Demonstration
I started getting the BBHN "itch" after reading W2TTT's "HSMM-MESH: Networking in EmComm Applications" article in the October 2013 CQ magazine. I managed to build a small two node MESH network in my house, with a Raspberry Pi IRC server, by the end of 2013. In early 2014 I started talking it up with some of my radio club members, but let it drop due to other considerations. I've continued to work on my MESH network, and have now expanded it to three nodes, one wireless access point, the Raspberry Pi IRC server, and a Foscam IP camera. My next goal is to build out another Raspberry Pi, install Samba on it, attach a 1TB USB external drive, and share that as external network storage. I was approached last week to give a presentation on Broadband-Hamnet to our radio club at our November meeting. I will be setting up my MESH network as a "show and tell" display, and will have at least two people bringing Linksys routers to get flashed and create other nodes. My ultimate goal is to build a first class MESH network in our county, to be used for events, and for emergencies. I just wanted to thank W2TTT, and all of the other members of this forum and site, for the instruction and information I've been able to get here. 73, Howard/AC4FS |

Ubiquiti 5.5.x Possible Solution
Lets hope it works out, as it would be great to modernize the hardware further. Lucky me, I received a Bullet M2 with 5.4.0 which worked out great. |

Ubiquiti 5.5.x Possible Solution
From what I have read on the OpenWRT website, it does appear the answer to the issue is to flash it back to a previous revision (before the new boot loader), and then flashing with our firmware wont causing bricking. I plan on discussing with the core team if this is actually a good plan of attack and if so, Ill write it up somewhere prominent on the site. 73 & Happy Meshing! Jim

Analog Voice Repeater Linking w/BBHN
Hi List, I've searched all of the forums and haven't come across anyone commenting on this topic. What I seek is info from someone who has successfully linked two analog ham repeaters. I understand that BBHN only moves data, so an external status / supervisory / contact closure type application would be needed, in addition to passing audio in both directions. Any help folks can provide is much appreciated. 73, Fred, K9VV / NP2X |

Ubiquiti 5.5.x Possible Solution
Hi All, Re:To solve the apparent issue with 5.5.x firmware on Ubiquiti hardware.
Would a solution be to flash the hardware with previous versions on firmware first say from here: http://ubnt.masolusi.com/download/firmware/IEEE802.11%20abg%20Solutions/ then Flash with BHMN firmware??? Just a thought....not tried it myself but would make sense unless hardware is prevented from backwards firmware updates. 73 Oliver M0OLI P.s if it is a work around then it might be worth someone downloading those files! |

Mesh Gateway Problem
Problem Solved. I guessed that the root of my problem was on the cellular carrier end and that they blocked the requests that a gateway node needed in order to broadcast its internet connection. I noticed too that when I was connected to my work VPN that pings to IP addresses worked. However, my company does not allow a VPN connection if that connection is shared (no surprise there). So I decided to try out on of the consumer VPN offerings available. I found one that does allow internet sharing and made the purchase and installed the software. That was all it took. Now the gateway node can advertise its internet connection and I can connect to any mesh in the node and still get to the internet. Hopefully this finding may be of use to someone in the future. 73, AC0LV |

Lack of persistence in opening port 6667 on wan side of firewall
As an update to this... my own testing isolates this problem solely to the ngircd 20.2 code. Hamchat works fine via the Wan ports all the time. Since there's ngircd 23 code on the author's website now, the anomaly experienced with the code here may have been solved elsewhere. I've also received offline support that confirms my discovery. The method described above has now become a reliable workaround and solves my problem. When I review the newer code I'll share the details here with an update report. |

Just curious if anyone has had any luck converting one of these units to BBHN? A quick search revealed no results.
Thanks! |
