I have my node set up. It's a Ubiquiti Nanostation in a window of my 14th floor apartment in downtown LA (facing east). Unfortunately it doesn't see any node but my other one (a linksys with improved antennas). On the upside I was able to connect through my two nodes at about 9 miles. Going to play around with my raspberry pi 2 and netbook linux server and see what services I can come up with for the node.

Hoping to connect sometime,

Anne

should be a ton of nodes near you. One big node on Pleasant's Peak. take a look at the map on www.ocmesh.org

It could be that the 40 miles to pleasant peak is just too far for my nanostation node to link up or downtown LA could just be a spot where the terrain gets in the way of coverage. I'll still keep looking for a node east of downtown (the direction my apartment faces).

Thanks,

Anne

I've successfully set up port forwarding and have services set up on my node via a Raspberry Pi. I currently have e-mail, ftp, asterisk/freepbx, Jabber and Joomla (although I'll probably change to a different CMS because version 3 is bloated with huge unnecessary javascript frameworks). Still can't pick up any nodes other than my second node, but eventually there will be another in range. 73, Anne

Anne, I connected from Torrance Hamcom with a 3Ghz NanoStation @ 42 miles. It was a ~60% Link Quality. We then went to a higher gain RocketDish and had 100% LQ. If you picked up a NanoBridge M3, that should also do the trick (this is actually a NanoStation attached to a higher gain reflector). 115 deg T (almost easterly :) ) @ 40miles. Mesh nodes up at 4000'.

I pulled up the ocmesh listing for pleasant peaks and noticed I was on the wrong channel and bandwidth. I flashed the Nanostation to AREDN 3.15.1.0b04 from BBHN 3.1.0 and set the channel to -2 and bandwidth to 10. Like magic, I connected to your node on Pleasant Peak from my QTH in downtown LA. I have link quality between 20% and 60% depending on which way the ether blows, but my Nanostation has linked over the 40 mile path. Sometime later, I will upgrade that link to something else with a little more gain and probably in the 3 or 5 MHz band to bring the link quality up and dtd my existing nodes to it. Right not the usability of the link is spotty. -- Anne

P.S. in the above message "3 or 5 MHz band" should read "3 or 5 GHz band" as of full dark of night my LQ drops as low as 7% so that 7-60% LQ, but it is still a link.

Check the 'distance' setting and make it 65000 (in meters). Might improve the LQ. I see you are being received with an 8 SNR. Also, the NanoStation has no electrical down-tilt as I recall. Consequently, at that distance look to have a .5 deg physical up-tilt to see if we can squeeze out any higher SNR. Joe AE6XE

Anne, Your high location may be sufficient to see the HRO Mesh nodes (shown on OCmesh.org). These are only ~23 miles from you. You've connected to an Omni there. I can see the mesh status on your NanoStation 4 hops away and over 70 miles of RF.

Joe, My Nanobridge M3 came in and I put it together and flashed the firmware and will be setting up soon. I want to confirm the link settings for AE6XE-PleasantsPk-RM3. Is it SSID: AREDN , BWidth: 10 MHz , Frequency: 3420? If it clears up a little where I can get a visual on it to help I may try to link up on 3 GHz tonight.

Correct. The NSM3 is a 90 deg sector, will be easy to do in the dark, just point in the general direction :) .

We have 100% link quality on the NB 3. The NS 2 is pointed generally southeast until someone wants to connect to it in another easterly direction and I change which way it points. Downtown LA is connected. Now, I have to wait for the rest of LA to catch up. 73, Anne
