BDAs with Long Coax Run Solution?
Greetings, all! I'm just starting to get into HSMM-MESH, and am loving it. Admittedly, I've got zero experience with GHz frequencies, but the study is fascinating. Just flashed about four WRT-54G's with great success. Oh my goodness, is this an eye-opening and devastatingly cool use of older technology. Come enter my brain for a sec...I need to know if bi-directional amplifiers (BDA's) would prove to be at all useful with long runs of LMR-400. The story is, I've got a cemented 8' pole out back that I was originally going to use with an HF antenna. Sadly, it didn't work out, and opted for a vertical for the moment. However, I was thinking: could there exist a potential opportunity to use this pole to mount a 24dBi parabolic WiFi antenna to use with a newly flashed HSMM-MESH router? The game is afoot! Here's the sad reality: the LMR-400 run is 140'. At first blush, I said forget it. However, I've been reading about bi-directional WiFi amplifiers and started wondering. My question is: would there be any hope of using my 140' run of LMR-400 coax with one of my flashed WRT-54G's (with a 24 dBi parabolic)? Would a BDA (or some other solution) make this dream a reality? Please go easy on me, as I tend to be more of a dreamer than anything. (LOL!) If BDA's won't do the trick, is there something reasonably-priced that would work? Thank you, thank you, thank you for reading this post, and dreaming-a-little-dream with me. :) Cheers, blessings, and 73s! Todd N9ZWY |

Part 97 Compliant - Disable SSID Broadcast
Three years later from the last message here, I'm looking at a related but different solution to broadcasts. I would like to be able to disable the actual WIFI transmitter/receiver function, just like in commercial use boxes, to be able to use multiple nodes in a hard wired cluster using just DTD connections. Even lowering the power to 1dBm, removing the antennas and shielding the connections allows some leakage between nodes with the result of node doubling showing up in the Mesh Node list.
I've poked around the firmware code on both Mesh nodes and DD-WRT flashed commercial nodes and have not yet found the exact switch that turns off wifi. I'll keep looking because I know it can be done, but I'm wondering if anyone "out there" has already done it. Again, it's the transmitter/receiver function I want to turn off, not SSID during regular use. Anyone do any work at this level of code and who could point out where I should look? |

Close, but no cigar (yet)
Good morning, I'm Allen Brooks n3ogd,in Tunkhannock, PA.
On Nov. 19th between 10 and 2pm hams interested in emergency comms. will be meeting a the PEMA EAST HQ in Hamburg, pa. Some of us are entering the field of hsmm and will be discussing this plus FLDIGI and other topics. We are not experts but stumbling beginners.
It is a way to let hams know about the Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) the ham arm of PEMA. Also to give hams a face to face with other ham of like interests.
Your invited but rsvp is asked for

5 Linksys routers for sale
Hi Jesse! Have any of them been modified w/ USB access or any other tweaks (or are they otherwise stock except for the 3.1.0 net image flashed? I'm interested as our club has been working on mesh networking, and I'm planning to give these away to the folks who otherwise wouldn't be able to participate. The more 'stock', the better, for that purpose.
Thanks!

I have 5 routers for sale. All are flashed with version 3.1.0. They are all a G or GL models and have stock antennas and power supplies. Looking to sell them as a single lot. $100 paid with PayPal shipped to the lower 48.
Thanks Jesse - WC3XS |

How can I "reflash" a 3.1.0 image in a 54G?
I am trying to get a mesh node and standard AP combo to work. I have done this before, but for some reason the mesh node seems to lack a WAN address, when the one that works has no trace of it. Something is different. The one that works is a GL, and the one that does is a Gv4.
So, I thought after doing a 30-30-30 reset and the problem persisted that I should retry flashing it. Oddly enough, the .bin file cannot be used to flash the mesh node. So, how do I do a reflash when I sue Win10 (Linux not an option)? Do I upload the 3.1 tgx file, then select that to flash it again? or is the image shown in the system as 3.1 tgx a file-system image that can be uploaded internally for a reflash? Very confusing, and I have no idea how to get this WAN issue to disappear. It does appear to impair connectivity through a gateway node. FYI I have 1 GW node, 1 working comb of 2 Linksys running mesh + standard AP, and then 1 non-reliable combo of Linksys running mesh (both 54G's) the mesh node having that odd WAN behavior that propagates as a failure to find a gateway in the AP. Ideas anyone? Thanks, Don VA7IQ/AE7UP |

Quite some time ago I set a MESH but no one is close enough for a connection. I picked up a Netis WF2501 repeater for cheap and wonder if it's usable for MESH. Bob W1CTC

I have a new node up just south of Newton, Utah in Cache County. Stock antennas only for now, but I have an omni and a 24db directional I'll be installing as soon as I know where to point (Nibley perhaps?). 41.848984,-112.0046087 |

Might I recommend the Ubiquiti AG-2G16-HP AirGrid M2-HP 16dBi Grid 2.4GHz. We are making a 20 mile link with two of these antennas. They are inexpensive and are complete and it has a relatively small foot print if that is an issue. |
