San Jose, Cupertino?
I'm thinking of buying this one for my node:
http://www.amazon.com/Yagi-Antenna-2-4GHz-17dBi-Angle/dp/B008Z4I7WQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1440835332&sr=1-2&keywords=17dbi+wifi+antenna
It is female N-type connector then running LMR-400 coax to my router and living with the loss instead of mounting the WRT54G on the mast.

Alternate to APRS
I'm new to HSMM-Mesh myself. But I would imagine now that Ubiquiti M9 devices are now supported, that might be a better match for a mobile application such as what you are thinking of. The 900Mhz band would be a little less crowded in most areas and also it is a little more suitable for an omni directional antenna set up than the higher 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz frequencies. But like I said, I'm no expert and I may be completely wrong in my assumption. N4TNA Chris

Lynksis vs Ubiquiti Help Me Decide
I am just getting interested in HSMM-MESH and I'm having trouble deciding where to start. I see advantages and disadvantages with both Lynksis and Ubiquiti products. Linksys operates on 12 volts, dual diversity antennas, and has both a Wan port and a built in 4 port switch. Both are good advantages, but the output power is kind of low and to connect better antennas you have to factor in coax losses. Ubiquiti devices on the other hand have a better output power and some models connect directly to the antenna with a built-in N type connector. Dissadvantages are only one ethernet port and 24volt poe. What do you gurus recommend as a first setup to prove concept and get other people excited about HSMM-Mesh. Mainly I want to impress the local Emergency Management Director with the capability and get him onboard with getting an established network in the area.
Thanks for your advise N4TNA Chris |

At this point, I could only realistically set up a setup in San Jose (@37.25192,-121.812908). I have the WRT router, is this still the best option? What would I want to do in the way of antennas? -- Ben (now K6BHB)

Not sure about Richmond, but we are picking up here in Tidewater area. Eventually with the goal of making it up the peninsula and into the Richmond area. Got a long way to go on this end, but making progress. Dave |

Hi Dave,
Glad to hear you are considering setting up some nodes at your location. My node up up about 15-20 feet on a fiberglass mast and I have turned it to the west to try to link with your node. You will likely need a higher gain directional antenna if you hope to connect to anyones nodes.
I also highly recommend that you list your nodes location on the official map on this site. Here is the link: ( http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/googlemapped-mesh-nodes.html ). This will allow myself and other hams to more accurately aim our antennas at your node, which is vital if we hope to link our nodes. I believe you are to the west of me up the hill. If that is correct then you are in a prime position to link to various nodes all over the South bay area. Ideally you would want to end up with multiple nodes, each aiming directional antennas at different nodes in the valley below.
Hope this info helps,
73!

Ubiquiti Bullet M2 Firmware Installation Problem
Just as a heads up I am experiencing the same problem. I have flashed the Ubiquiti device and it does not respond to the localnode:8080 or other url addresses suggested. However if I look in the network connection setup it lists an IP for the gateway. I can enter that address and then :8080 and volia, it worketh. Chuck

Nodes from DFW to I-35W in North Tarrant
We have North Tarrant County covered with Broadband from Dallas Fort Worth Airport through Southlake, Keller. With 14 mile coverage. We have just gained permission from Hospital in Keller that will extend our coverage past I-35W. Which will give us 18-22 mile coverage in N. Tarrant. Work for installation begins today. Next stop will be Texas Motor Speed way which we already have permission to mount antennas there. Randy, WA0D |
