Love to see what you come up with. I want to try one soon too. I have the computers I just need the Asterisk box built. Takes time.

Worked great! All 3 are back where they can be accessed. Now to find a place to deploy them. Hills and trees of North GA. Good if you have access to the tops. I don't.

Topic : Dumb question ...???

It is confusing. We can try to document it, but the IEEE standard name for the field is SSID in the 802.11b/g standard. So we could just confuse another group of users, by renaming it. SSID is the official name, not a nicname. This and other issues keep pointing towards a HSMM or 802.11b/g/a guide for those with a ham background. There is more than enough to read out there, so I felt another book would just go unread. I will make a note of in in my documentation and see if it gets included when the developers vote on what goes in the next release. Glad you got meshed. -Glenn KD5MFW

Glenn:  Wonder if a block name change is in order?  What threw us for a curve is the SSID which for me is a number after your callsign aka the old packet days.  Wonder if changing that block to NETID or something that might not lead an old guy off on a wild goose chase?

Thanks for you help!!!

["Boot_wait" off by default on these routers, so you should turn it on, see OpenWrtDocs/BootWait.]

If I click this link, the webpage says the topic does not exist yet.

How do I access this boot_wait option? Should I upgrade firmware first, or switch boot_wait on first?

Thank You, Trent KJ4KAF

OK, glad you tracked it down. All the mesh systems I know of use "ad hoc" mode at the low level of the protocl. Ad Hoc mode requires all computers linking use exactly the same network name. You can run test mesh networks by giving a different name as you did. Even if running on the same channel, only networks of the same name will link with each other. If you want to find out more, do a Google search on "wi-fi ad hock mode". -Glenn KD5MFW

Glenn: Told you it was a dumb question! I found the dumb answer. Was reading in one of the docs that if you changed the ssid to something else, then it would not work as intended. In the SETUP screen I entered N4EV-100 or N4EV-101 at the top of the screen, then down on the left side I changed hsmm-mesh to read N4EV-100 and N4EV-101. When I changed it back to hsmm-mesh, it worked as planed! Moral: Gota read more BEFORE you start trying to re-configure! HI Thanks for your help and now I'm going to start MESHing. Clayton N4EV

You can always reload, now using the .trx file. The first load needs to be a .bin to work with the Linksys loader. Once you have HSMM-MESH running, you can always us the HSMM-MESH .trx file to load the firmware. You seem to have the HSMM-MESH firmware loaded so it seems you did the right thing. You should not have to load a .bin file then a .trx version of the firmware to get going. -Glenn KD5MFW

Seems odd. We will just have to keep plugging away until we find what is wrong. If the nodes both show a wi-fi scan with HSMM-MESH as well as the laptop, the RF side of things seems to be working. The model numbers of the WRT54G you listed sound fine. Can you capture screen shots of what you see with your web browser? On windows you can usually use the "ALT PRTSC" ALT key plus Print Screen pressed at the same time to do a screen capture of a window. If you save the screen and either paste it into a document or attach the the photo do an email, I could see what the screen says. A capture of the main page (172.27.0.1:8080), the mesh status page and the set up page are of interest. All seems right except the nodes you say, do not seem to see each other. You can email the screen captures to glenn.kd5mfw@gmail.com. Are you able to do the screen captures? -Glenn KD5MFW

Topic : Two questions on HSMM-MESH

I received funding for some links to study "Network Survivability of Distributed Decentralized Networks". We are looking at network survivability defined as being able to transfer "useful" amounts of data for emergency comms rather than restoring full network capability.  Basically, we're going to measure latency, throughput and connectivity on a network like I described in the earlier post and try to determine what the minimums are for useful communication.  I'll the posts here updated if anyone is interested.

Topic : Two questions on HSMM-MESH

We have been taking a bit different approach here.  We're using 5.7Ghz 802.11n for backbone links using directional antennas but keeping the patterns pretty broad by using backfire or panel antennas (17 to 20dBi at 90 or 120 degrees).  The goal is to multiply connect the nodes and let either OSPF, some form of meshing or both handle connectivity changes.  The idea is for these links to be able to take a fair amount of shaking and still be reasonably aligned.  These links are operated as part 15 devices so we don't have restrictions on encryption, etc.  We control access to these tightly.  We can make this work very reliably at fairly high transfer rates (32Mbs) over paths up to 25 miles though we're trying to keep most to 20 miles for fade margin purposes.  These connect Access Nodes on 2.4Ghz 802.11g/n that use omnis (12 - 15dBi) or multiple panel antennas (15 to 17dBi) to provide user access.  Still working on the ranges for the access nodes but reliable omni range should be in the 3-5 mile range using omnis and up to 15 miles using grids or backfire antennas.

Both nodes list each other on the WiFi list as does my laptop using it's WiFi.  I might add that

both are WRT54's one is a ver 2 and the other a ver 1.1.

These radios are computers as well. You normally connect through one of the LAN ports and run the radio via the web page in the node. Historically Unix / Linux computers have had a console for debugging. The WRT54G has 2 serial ports, they just do not bring the connections out. Most normal users never know they are there. Hook them up and you have a serial port console where you can log in and have a command line Linux console. The second serial port can be used for anything you do with a serial port - hook up a GPS, TNC for your packet system etc. The Broadcom chip the whole router is based on has these serial ports built into the chip. So they are there if you have a use for them. They are TREMENDOUSLY useful. -Glenn KD5MFW

Go to the wi-fi survey page on each node. See if each node sees HSMM-MESH. We can go from there. -Glenn KD5MFW

With 12 dB omni antennas over flat land with little other RF, 7 miles is our max link. This is with no amps. 10 mile links are done, at will, with 24dB antennas, no amps across RF busy Austin, TX. We have one link of over 15 miles, but antenna alignment is tough at this distance. Again no amps were used, just good antennas. -Glenn KD5MFW

Open WRT talks about taking the router apart. I don't understand what this is about. It mentions an unpopulated 10 pin header with 2 serial connections, and a DB9 connector. Is this part of HSMM-mesh or something else. I thought my laptop would connect through the Network cat5 cable.

Thank You Trent KJ4kKAF

Glenn: I did set the callsign and ssid. I have been to the status page and neither node knows of the other one. Both nodes act like they are fully functional but they simply do not know each other. I did see a signal level BEFORE I had the second unit for a day or so but that is no longer there. I have looked at the "site monitor" on the laptop and both nodes are there with equal signal levels. This brings me to a question that I didn't ask but I used the '.bin file to flash, do you also have to re-flash with the '.trx' file? Thanks Clayton N4EV

Topic : wrt54gl routers from Amazon

thank you very much for the prompt reply. I'm not at the building stage yet but until I found this site, I always wondered the answer to that question. Then couple that with reading questions and answers on the auctions like I did on one of them today on Ebay where the person asked what the first digits of the serial number were- caused me to wonder just exactly how much it mattered, or if you got the wrt54gl that was good enough, regardless of the serial. Thanks, James

All versions of the WRT54GL (note L for Linux) work well with HSMM-MESH. (Version 1.0 and 1.1 both work well.) -Glenn KD5MFW
