No Mike, you only need 1 server, and both clients connect to it.
I would assume having both on one node would cause a problem because they woudl both use 6667, and one might jam up the other.
When you try and connect the one not on the server node, how do you initiate the connection? With me, I have an advertised service link that I just click (irc://k5ktf-ub:6667 in the services portion)and it opens mIRC and attempts to join the channel. If you are trying to connect by telling the client software directly, are you telling it the LAN IP or the Wireless IP? The 10.X.X.X WLAN is the one you should tell it. |

Thank you, Jim... I do have 6667 open as described above. I forgot to say that the first time. I tried having both computers on the same node via the LAN ports. I can transfer files this way. When I move the computer to a different node then it's a no go. Does each node need the IRC server? I'm missing something here.

Let's MESH around on January 21, 2012
This afternoon we spent some time learning a bit more about HSMM-MESH. Marty W9OV flashed a WRT54GL creating a second node for our tests. Tim, K4KWQ also acquired a WRT54GL and is planning to flash that one too.
KV4I-100 advertised services appeared on W9OV-100 and computers connected to the LAN ports on W9OV-100 were able to access the webserver on a laptop connected to KV4I-100.
I learned the hard way something I should have learned by reading the HSMM-MESH.org website. "Your "target IP" will ALWAYS be the WLAN IP of the node that the target is connected to."
I didn't have time to test D-RATs or FocusPhone from one node to another but I've had success so far in access the RatFlector on the KV4I-100 node by telling D-RATs on local node connected PCs to look for a RatFlector at KV4I-100:9000. I'm hoping that this will also work when accessed from a second node.
Having fun and learning more. 73

IRC File Transfer
Hi Mike,
Yes, my neighbor KA5FZU and I have done file transfers via IRC (6.39MB in 56 seconds).
We both are using mIRC as the windoze client on each end.
And looking at my K5KTF-USB node where the ngircd is installed, I only have port 6667 opened to localnode on that node for IRC.
Give that a shot and see.

IRC File Transfer
Hello, All... I'm just getting started with HSMM-MESH. I have set up two nodes and on one set up IRC with the help of Rusty Haddock/AE5AE's instructions. The IRC chat server works great along with the nodes. I am able to open ports and make connections with windows share.
MY question is... is it possible to use the file transfer part of the IRC chat? I have ports 4990-5000 forwarded to the local host. I've spent a day here trying different preference setting with each computer on the network. No luck. I get notification that the file transfer is pending. I OK the transfer and the connection seems to time out.
Any suggestions? Thanks! Mike |

another south austin node - KF5KWE
Hi KF5MFL & all,
I just joined and am excited to help with the Austin-area mesh. I'm in Buda and I work in Kyle, so I'm hoping to get an average node up at each location this spring. Don't know what all I'll be able to connect to off the bat, but once I get some directionals going and maybe some amplification, I hope to be a steady addition to the south mesh.

SSID's on mesh nodes
Hello All,
Rusty, I think I mis-spoke when I asked about the ID's for SSID's. I have all mine set to HSMM-MESH like it is suppose to be. On the other hand, I was asking about the Node Name, (my mistake).
K5KTF, yep, it's really starting to roll here in my area. Got a lot of hams really wanting to come on board with this project. We have a few hamfests and tailgates coming up and they are looking for the right routers to use. As soon as they start getting online I'll have them post here. I have a few routers here, so I may have to pass them out to help get the area covered more until they get their own node setup. I see a bunch on ebay at a fair price so some deals can be found there too. We also have a couple of guys that want to put up a access point with a Linux box, so that should be fun.
Anyway, I'll keep all up to date from this area (Sarasota, Florida).

N8OHU,
You've got me at a disadvantage.
I know that D-RATS runs on Linux. I've got it running on a Pentium 266MHz 128 MB pc on Puppy Linux and I see from http://www.d-rats.com/releases/ that there are APT, RPM and YUM installs.
However, I'm not familiar with the requirements for running applications on a MESH router.

What would really be interesting is having the RAT-Flector running on the mesh hardware, but that would require a native Broadcom port of D-RATS, which doesn't exist. :( |

Jerome,
I installed D-RATS (which includes the D-RATS Repeater AKA RatFlector) on my computer and started the RatFlector which uses port 9000. The only configuration I needed to do was to name the RatFlector, MESH-RAT
On my HSSM-MESH node KV4I-100, I established a DHCP reservation for my RatFlector PC and advertised the service.
I installed D-RATS on a second computer and configured the radio port to "net:172.27.0.106:9000", the address for my first computer.
After both computers were connected to my MESH-NODE, KV4I-100, I was able to connect to the RatFlector MESH-RAT via the node.
Saturday, I plan to test the connection from a second MESH node.
We've already used D-RATS as an email gateway to forward to the Internet, emails received via RF and originated from a station without Internet access.
I like the idea of testing D-RATS on the Mesh as D-RATS can interface with multiple transport mechanisms at the same time. It also provides real-time chat, file transfers, includes a Winlink 2000 telnet client and an Internet email client.

Mark,
You just answered a question that I had today ... whether D-Rats would work over HSMM-Mesh (yes! ... good to know!).
Can you make available your Hardware and Software setups and configurations so that I can duplicate it here in Atlanta?
Thanks!
Jerome

I have created a tutorial for a mail server for Winlink2000. Let me know what you think. Check it out here:

Frank,
I posted a response to your D-RATS question in this forum at http://hsmm-mesh.org/index.php?option=com_ccboard&view=postlist&forum=15&topic=122&Itemid=67
It seems we'll likely have more discussion on this so I posted it as a new topic.
Thanks,

D-RATS Integration
I've been asked about HSMM-MESH and D-RATS integration.
One nice thing about D-RATS software is that it can communicate over D-STAR RF, Analog RF via a TNC and an Internet connection all at the same time.
To illustrate what I think may be a full exploitation of these attributes, I've prepared the accompanying graphic.
We've already been successful in sending an email to an Internet recipient over RF on D-RATS to a second D-RATS station that has an Internet connection.
It seems to me that an HSMM-MESH user running D-RATS should be able to communicate with an RF connected D-STAR user via a mutually available RATFlector. I'm hoping to run some tests to see if this is a practical application.

GM from Montana,
Logged into K7MT-101 and linked to K7MT-100 localnode:8080. Link is good and will now take a look at setting up the server on my APRS BPQ32 Computer.
First goal is to set up a port for BPQ32 Switch so Ican access the program remotely then go to the BBS, WWW Chat, RMS Packet, local packet, and Winlink.
The adventure begins.
