I am new at this, so if I do it wrong please forgive me.

I am with a new group of hams in the Corinth, MS. area, we are attempting to build out a 900Mhz

mesh for emergency preparedness.

We need more gain with nanostation loco units.  See that there is a SMA connector where another

antenna can be attached, but if I connect a yagi antenna to this connector what about the built-in

internal antenna?  Won't this double-terminate the unit if I connect a external yagi antenna?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Bob / k0ris

The non-loco models have more power. If you add a yagi externally, you lose the benefit of MIMO on the nanostations.

Oh man! I may be really in over my head. What do you mean by I'll loose the benefit of MIMO? Bob / K0RIS

sorry. didn't mean "acronym-soup" you.

MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) is an antenna technology for wireless communications in which multiple antennas are used at both the source (transmitter) and the destination (receiver). The antennas at each end of the communications circuit are combined to minimize errors and optimize data speed.

OK, OM. That helps, I think. Soooo how can we get more range out of our nanostation locos?

can't comment on that.

I do know that the NS Loco M2 are rated 23dBm  (around 200mW)

The NS M2's are rated at 27dBm (around 500mW)

(8db difference)

And FWIW, from my reading...

WRT54G = 15 dBm = 32 mW
WRT54GS = 18 dBm = 63 mW

Thanks James. I am an OTer, me and a fellow ham are attempting to start a mesh network. We chose 900 because we felt it had better propagation. We are approximately 3 miles apart (maybe not line of site - trees) but have been unable to establish a link. Where could we get some assistance?

oops. Was just called to my attention... I didn't properly register your posting. You are using 900Mhz. sorry, the M900 is only available in the Loco version. My bad.

I like UBNT's path prediction tool: AirLink.
