OK, I guess I bit off the big piece here...

I asked for this geographic area to be added to the MESH forums so all us "BIG APPLE" types can have a centralized posting place... (thanks Jim)

That being said it would be nice to have everyone check in and give their info on where they are in setting up/running/or planning their MESH node(s)

The possibilities are endless....

The DMR guys can use it to run the DMR links..The ARES/RACES guys can use it for emergency response like we had during SS Sandy and other related weather events here on LI, and there are just so many more uses for it that can't even begin to be realized as yet...

So here is my info so far..

I currently have three WRT54GS's up and running locally in my QTH..  (N2PPN-0001 through 0003)

I am running a few tests on them and will be looking for homes to set the first two up in... I have put out "feelers" to a few places I would like to set them up at, just trying to not be too intrusive yet with antennas and outdoor "adornments"... for the time being they are all up, running and are waiting for something to do...

OK, that's my story so far...

Next...

YVW Rich.

Even though there is a East NY, NYC/LI is big enough they should have their own.

With all them big buildings, y'all should be able to have one hell of a mesh network around there soon.

If those NYC landlords we have heard so much about would be nice enough to agree :-)

Happy Meshing!

KTF

P.S.  I guess I should go make up one for L.A. now, too, so as not to play favorites, huh? Cool

Jim - thanks for being the fabulous admin for the site and forums! Rich - my friend Richard, KD2EWX, and I are beginning to acquire the routers in hopes of setting up two or three of them here in Astoria, Queens. We're in the experimental/learning phase. I have a WRT-54GL purchased from Craigslist and hope to acquire more. Richard is doing the same. You are definitely right in that the possibilities are endless, and I'm interested in deployable ARES/emergency communications - especially after Sandy. I don't think I'll have any luck with landlords here in NYC as many of them want $$ for any sort of roof use, but I might ping some of my friends who have access to high points in Manhattan. Is the Yagi in your setup commercial or homebrewed? Just wondering... I'll keep you in the loop! Norm KB2JRP

UH, what Yagi are you referring to?

I have dishes (commercially bought from Titan/Fab-corb/L-com).

I DO have 2 Cushcraft Yagis (in radomes) out back, heavily grounded (as in laying on), needing repair--a buddy borrowed and appeared to him that the feedline came loose from the driver element. I personally havent looked (no gumption or time)

The MFJ yagis are inexpensive and work fairly well, when enclosed in a radome or stiffened up--being stamped aluminum, it will sway in a breeze spraying the signal.

I just put up a node KD2CXK-001 on the 18th floor outdoors in Glendale Queens. I dont see anyone. I can see almost to Melville long island. No obstructions. Is the SSID name end in V1 or V2?

Most have either upgraded to v.2 or loaded that version I believe.

KD2CXK, which way are you facing? If you are facing a little south of midtown Manhattan, I'd be willing to give it a try. It almost sounds like you are facing east if you can see Melville. You might also consider upgrading to V3 as this is the current version of software. This would make the SSID end in v3. 73, Mark, N2MH West Orange, NJ, FN20vt
