At PACIFICON 2010, I attended a talk given by Jason Spense, KG6RGF "Reviving the HSMM Hinternet" and came out of it really motivated to get into building some HSMM-MESH nodes.

Earlier this month, there was a terrific Webinar given by the very active HSMM group down in Texas.  Since then I've flashed a WRT54Gv2 with the 0.4.1 Firmware and I'm about to flash another one, which then, according to Arlo Guthrie, makes it a conspiracyCool

I've also picked-up four Ubiquiti Bullet 2HP's in hopes of being able to some day use them with this firmware, and until then, use them for a backbone or two.

If you're in the Bay Area, or for that matter, anywhere in the region, it would be great to hear from you, and maybe we can get this network built!  I'm also very interested in setting up portable and mobile nodes for experimentation. No doubt there are already a few of your probably quite a bit further along than I am.

How about linking some nodes up at SFBAY area clubs during Field Day??

By the way, have any of you thought about the fact that most of the time, with HSMM, we're operating at QRPp levels.  Make sure you mention that next time someone says "that's not ham radio."  I tell you this because I'm going to tell you something else:  "72" is what often QRPers say to one another in QSOs and correspondence; much the same way '73' is often used by hams in general.  Therefore:

72/73!!

Hi Jack, Its been a while since you posted, but if you are interested I just flashed a WRT54GL, and from my QTH (550ft on the slopes of Mt Tam) can see Berkeley. If you want to sked, call me on the Mt Tam repeater 146.700 pl 179, or call 415 225 9170 Rob NZ6J-1

Do you have coordinates for the Mt. Tam site? We might take a shot at it in a few weeks. We are planning links that are in MT. Tams line of site between a few radio clubs.

Hi Rob,

Is the Mt. Tam node on the air? Any plans to post it to the map on here?

Do you happen to know of anyone else with nodes on the air but not listed on the map?

A couple friends and I are planning to build up the HSMM-MESH network in the south bay and Fremont area over the next few months. With any luck we will get other hams and clubs in the area to join us on the air.

 Check out the discussion here:

I thought you guys might be interested to hear that I just put a node on the air in Fremont. It is now listed on the map as well. Don't forget to to talk your friends into setting up nodes as well. KK6INS

I will be in Fremont/Milpitas this Friday, 19th Sept, and can bring down a couple of my nodes. Is the Fremont node still up? approximate QTH? One of my nodes is mounted on a 10 ft wooden dowel with a +18dBi yagi. If you're interested we can sked around lunch time? Call me on 146.52 or call 415 225 9170 Rob NZ6J

I just got my node online.  I'm in Pittsburg, CA.  I put it on the map. Sadly I'm not picking up any other nodes in the area. I'm using the ver 3 firmware on a Ubiquiti Bullet M2 with a vertical.

I took my node down in Pittsbur but I will put it back up to see if we can network. I dont live far away but line of site may be a problem. There are a few other hams in the area that can get nodes up. One is close to you Let me do a path analysis. How high is your antenna?
