A new BBHM 3.0.0 node is now operating in midtown Albany. The K2ALB-CENTRAL node utilizes a Ubiquiti Bullet M2 HP into an 18 db gain whip antenna. The setup is at the top of the elevator penthouse of a three story commercial building with a generally unobstructed view so an omnidirectional pattern should be achieved. The node is at low power in a testing phase but is expected to be turned up to full output next week.

Remember, to communicate with the node your device must be on the 3.0.0 firmware.

Coordinates are: 42.665107 N, 73.77317 W or roughly at the intersection of Central Ave. and Quail St.

Reports are greatly appreciated. A quick screenshot of your node's connection and your exact location would be very helpful as we try to figure out the coverage. Send reports to km2o@arrl.net

Thanks

Dave,

Well done! For some reason I haven't gotten updates from the forums, so I've missed out on your updates and replies to my posts. The next time TARA has a board meeting I'll mention your node setup.

Unfortunately my QTH (Averill Park) is probably too distant to establish a connection. My office (353 Broadway, Troy) has generally poor line of sight towards Albany, but the landlord has been accomodating towards roof access in the past. I have a Linksys node in my vehicle mostly for giggles and grins, but it might be fun to use it + a battery operated node to set up a video link for some of TARA's public service events...

Dave,

What antenna did you go with for the Bullet?

Looking at AirGrid M to establish a link to K2ALB-CENTRAL, but I think terrain/trees might be an issue from my QTH.

I suppose I could always point the AirGrid in that direction and hope that someone sets up a node somewhere in betweeen... :)

Very curious as to antenna selection, as well. Seems to be quite a few differing opinions online as to "best" hardware for directional (yagi or dish) and omni (vertical). Looking to potentially play RF put up some nodes around town.

Dave,

The UPS man brought me an Airgrid M2 today and I've flashed it. It's chatting up my 3.0.0 WRT54G units here just fine. Will probably get them all upgraded to 3.0.1 soon.

Once it's safe to go up on the roof again (soon? snow tomorrow!) I'll get it positioned and oriented in your node's direction.

I'm not overly optimistic, but we have to start somewhere, right?

Dave,

I got the AirGrid up on the roof yesterday and have it aimed (best I can muster) towards K2ALB-CENTRAL. My pessimism was rewarded, and it doesn't look like I'll be able to establish a link from my home QTH. I'm going to leave it up for a few days (as I'm not too hot to get right back on the roof) but I don't think the situation will change.

I may talk with the TARA Board and see if they'd be willing to arrange space on the Troy water tower in exchange for me donating the equipment to the club. A link between Troy and Albany would be a great start for a mesh network in our area.
