Email - Looking for hints
Hi Tom.
Just flicking through posts about email on the mesh. I have successfully set up Mailenable Standard version 8 (and free)onto a spare XP machine I use for proof of concept for the mesh. Initially I could not get it to work at all either sending or receiving emails. Last Thursday 18/3/15 with the help of a local IT guy we were able to send and receive without any problem. On Friday I tweaked the system and it works perfectly. I use Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail and had a Linux version of email all working together, sending normal emails and even attachments (pictures and documents). I did not need a DNS server to achieve this you just have to make sure all the nodes can see each other and instead of using a server name for the POP and SMTP I used the IP address of the host computer. At the same time I was also running Yawcam bi directionally. The next task is to try all this over a distance.

Where is HamChat?
I see 10 applications on the first page and two applications on the second page. None of them are hamnet server. I was referring to this URL: http://broadband-hamnet.org/applications-for-the-mesh.html?start=10 Is it possible to distribute HamChat in a way similar to a patch file, where an upload to the mesh node magically has the correct thing happen? Thanks and 73, Andy

Or.... save yourself a lot of trouble and go to my Hamchat.ipk message in Applications. Click on the link I provide in my message and download the
.ipk file to your PC and then upload said file via the "Choose File" in the
Package Management section of the Administration webpage on the node.
My package contains and installs all the files from the original .zip file.
With this, there is no need to follow the installation part of the README
file and all one has to do is set up the advertising for this service -- http://{mynodename}/cgi-bin/hamchat.pl |

If this will help anyone you can go to "Forums, applications, scroll down to Hamnet server the second page down at bottom under VE3NKL 11/18/2012 and download a zip file entitled HamChat. I did know I just have to figure out what to do with. When you unzip the folder it has a nice read me file. |

Tunnel questions
Hi everybody, I am pretty ignorant on using Tunneling and I have some questions. Firstly, does using a Tunnel Client require port forwarding. There is somebody that would like to try out the capabilities of BBHN without having to buy the expensive equipment needed to make the long distance link that will be needed for me to connect with them. The problem is, they are using a wireless internet provider that has a has a big firewall sett up for the network, and they do not allow port forwarding.
Second, if I have a Tunnel Server, will people be able to connect to it on RF and talk to people connected using the tunnel?
Third, is it correct that a Tunnel Server is like the center of a star network and all the Tunnel Clients connect to it and talk to each other and anybody who might be connected to the Tunnel Server node over RF?
Fourth, can people connect with RF to a Tunnel Client and use it to access the Tunnel Server?
Lastly, any good articles on here that could answer these questions and just provide a good description of how Tunneling exactly works?
Thanks! KK4TGV

Oh and BTW - 4-5 watts into a 24db BBQ grill dish gets you an ERP between 600 and 750 watts! (if my math is right...)
NOT something to screw around with... Just a friendly warning! :)

Please allow me to save you some aggravation... It's JUNK! I tried it, it didn't help much... OK, it worked but it just didn't make enough difference to make buying it worth it. It's like pissing in the wind...
However, THIS one works! I know, I liked it so much I bought TWO of them!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CR6V0GS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use it on my mobile and it REALLY makes a difference! Tip - pay attention to the config, it makes a difference! Don't go for MAX power out, too much chance for "splatter". Set the little switches accordingly. Also, be very mindful of standing around your high gain antenna with this puppy running full tilt boogie. If it will melt a chocolate bar, it will damage your eyes and by the time you notice, it will be TOO LATE! So don't screw around with your health!
Who likes toasted corneas?!? Not ME!
4 or 5 watts into a 24db antenna = you don't want to risk it - seriously... I do my antenna testing OUTSIDE a metal barn, with the metal doors closed, sitting on a tripod 50 ft. away and me inside, away from direct contact with the RF. Although I thought melting a Hershey bar was kinda cool - Someday I wanna crispy critter a pesky Mockingbird on my tower! :) I swear to God, he makes a game of crapping in my tower leg mounted Davis Instruments rain gauge! RF radiation DOES have its uses! :)

OK All the nodes are Linksys and I am trying to use the "Firmware update" under the administrator heading with the patch. Would I be better served to just go pull them all in, one is high on the tower and run the 3.1.0 TRX file?? |

I'm not able to access the git repositories anymore. Have they moved? Have you considered hosting the repositories on GitHub? It's very easy to get started there, and a pleasant platform to work with. 73, Clayton |

Are you patching Linksys or Ubiquiti nodes? If you have both types of nodes
there is a specific file for each type. It's NOT one file patches all. :)
That error message is only used by our firmware if the file name of the
patch does not match "patch*.tgz". |

Can't connect to servers behind a Mesh Access Point
SOLVED: Boneheaded move on my part. KG7OHT-001-SERVER has two network interfaces: en0, which was connected via cat5 to my home network and can get out to the Internet, and wlan0, which was connected to the mesh network via KG7OHT-002. Once I disabled en0 (ifdown en0) I was able to hit KG7OHT-001-SERVER from anywhere in the mesh network. So remember, boys and girls. If you have two interfaces, set your mesh network as primary, or route all 10. traffic through that interface and all other traffic through your other interface. 73s! |

Attached is a diagram of the network. As discussed below, Laptop2 cannot connect to KG7OHT-003-SERVER through KG7OHT-001:80 with port forwarding configured as follows: INTERFACE:OUTSIDE_PORT:LAN_IP:INSIDE_PORT WIFI:80:KG7OHT-003-SERVER:80 However, Laptop1 can connect to KG7OHT-010-SERVER since KG7OHT-010-SERVER is wired through ethernet ports to KG7OHT-010. |

Topic :
Can't connect to servers behind a Mesh Access Point
I've been researching this issue and trying so many different solutions that I'm at the end of my rope. Here's what I'm trying to do: I have a UBNT Bullet M2 configured as a Mesh Node, NAT, and working properly, KG7OHT-001. KG7OHT-001 is connected to LAN port 2 on KG7OHT-002, a WRT54G configured as a Mesh Access Point, NAT, SSID KG7OHT-WIFI. KG7OHT-003-SERVER is connected via WIFI to SSID KG7OHT-WIFI. It gets IP address 172.27.0.8. It is running a webserver on port 80. I can connect any WIFI device (laptop, phone, tablet) to KG7OHT-WIFI, get an IP address, and access http://KG7OHT-003-SERVER/. Works great! Next up: add another Mesh Node to the network. This one is a Bullet M2 configured as a Mesh Node as KG7OHT-020. If I connect a laptop to KG7OHT-020, I cannot get to http://KG7OHT-003-SERVER/. Makes sense because it is on IP 172.27.0.8. So to make that accessible from KG7OHT-020 (or any other Mesh Node on the network) I have to setup port forwarding on KG7OHT-001. So I do that. Under Port Forwarding I create a new rule on the WIFI interface, outside port 80, LAN IP 172.27.0.8 (KG7OHT-003-SERVER), LAN port 80, and click Add. Then I save the config and 20 seconds later it's "ready." Theoretically, I should now be able to connect from KG7OHT-020 to http://KG7OHT-001:80/ to access the web server that's running on KG7OHT-003-SERVER on IP 172.27.0.8. However, the connection is never accepted. It stalls for a bit but never establishes a connection to port 80. I'm beginning to think that it's impossible to have a machine connected to localap and share its services to the outside mesh network. Is this a bug, or did I configure something wrong? Thanks so much in advance for your help! KG7OHT Chachi |

Small Amp?
Anybody know of a small amp that will take the 79mw of the Linksys up to 1 or 2 watts? I found one on Amazon- http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Broadband-Amplifier-Extender-Repeater/dp/B00HJ1NQLS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426969242&sr=8-1&keywords=2.4+ghz+amplifier but I am not sure if it REALLY does what it says it does.
Thanks! KK4TGV

Get Involved!
I wonder if there is any current activity and expansion of the mesh network in the Phoenix Metro area?
I am interested in setting up a node at my QTH, but probably would have difficulty linking to any existing nodes, if there are any in the SW Valley. I am in Estrella Mountain Ranch in Goodyear, and unfortunately, I have a small mountain about 350 feet just north of my QTH (33.313567, -112.444733).

Get a message "Firmware cannot be updated the uploaded file is no recognized" I even tried to unzipping the patch file changing it from a TGZ file to a TAR file but still same message. Any help would be appreciated and Thanks from Tennessee |

No, it should be on the server in the Packages pulldown, but I bet I have it in the wrong place. Give me a few to figure out where I messed up and try again in a day. (I have it working for WRTs, since I have those and can test that :-) ) |
