PVC and 2.4ghz
When testing materials at 2.4GHz, the microwave oven in your kitchen is your best friend. These units make 700 to 1100 watts of RF output at 2450MHz. This is the same frequency as your 2.4GHz mesh node. To test PVC or any plastic under consideration, fill a glass or cup with water and put a sample of the plastic to be tested in the microwave. They should be in different places on the same turntable. Start the oven for 10 seconds. Examine the plastic to see if ANY warmth is felt on it. If still cold, restart the oven for one minute. Again check for heating. Finally, replace your water in the cup with cold water and cook them both for 2 minutes. If the plastic comes out cold, no energy is being absorbed. This means the plastic is transparent at that frequency. Be sure you know whether you will use any adhesive or joint compound in your project. If so, you need to create a joint, similar to what you will use, and test that combination also. You can use a microwave to test a number of materials in this manner but be sure not to put any metal in there. This test is also a predictor (but not totally accurate for 3.4 and 5GHz)

The lone node in Tamarac
I setted two nodes, many hams near me are working on it. please see the map and try to connect with us. I sent and will keep sending email to other hams around us. I found email address in qrz.con guided for the grid option. I'm working to add two amps [ 4w ], and an antenna onmi, and a yagi; all powered with a solar panel using a POE . The second node is to work VoIP, etc. at shack.

Hamchat Question?
Ah! Thanks for correcting me. So to answer the OP: Install hamchat on kp4rv-3 On one computer, connected to any node, go to the stated address with your browser. Enter a callsign. On the second computer, connected to any node, also go to the same link and enter a callsign. Type a message on either computer and hit "enter" and it appears on both computers. Repeat.

Diversity on Dual Polarity Ubiquiti Devices
Team, (From Wgtn NZ with a 13 node mesh)
A thread close to my heart.
Recently I have been setting both Linksys and Ubiquity devices (dual polarity version) to forced Vertical TX/RX(LS that's all it has) the effect was to drop sigs to/from ALL visible Ubiquity Nano station neighbors (all set to diversity) very substantially. There did not appear to be any change of operation in the neighbors and it looked as though I was I operating cross polar. Has anybody experimented with Vertical only nodes working polarization diversity Ubiquity NS and can advise if same result seen. My understanding of the thread is the remote NS should follow polarization Ta 73 de Ted ZL2TB |

Just install hamchat on one of your nodes. You probably want to add a link to it as an advertised service that would look something like: http://YourNodeHame/cgi-bin/hamchat.pl:8080/ The "client" is just your browser. Dunno if you need to upgrade, I've used 3.1 from the start.

HamChat Server
Great simple package. I did not like, however, that after setting up the service you have to right click the link to open a new chat window so as to stay in the node interface. A limitation of setting up service links. If you can move around a Linux command line, this is solvable. Instead of setting up a service, I opened and SSH session and created a simple web page with some JavaScript buttons that opens the chat room in a popup window. This allows users to simply click a button which opens popup without having to play games with right clicks. After creating the page I set the page up as an advertised service with easy navigation back to the node interface. |

Sector antennas... considerations
Hi All, I am attempting to pioneer a mesh for my rural area. As part of this task, I am looking at installing sector antennas and mesh nodes on the club-owned repeater tower and maybe a couple commercial towers. I will also likely have a set of sector antennas on a small tower on my hilltop. What are some of the things/problems that I will have to consider with putting, say 3 x 120* sector antennas on the same tower? Do they play well as long as they are pointed in opposite directions or do they need extra shielding? I figure I'll run shielded cat 5/6 cable down the tower to a Ubiquiti ToughSwitch. I may also link the towers (if I can) with a 5.8 GHz link, but that's a discussion for another day. Any tips or pointers for installing multiple nodes on one tower?
Thanks in advanced for the help and advice. 73, Matt KD2HKB |
