Hello I am realy new at this. I have a wrt54g 2.2. I uploaded the software and walked through it with the old buzzards guide. No problems. Until I hit the part about saveing the initial setup with the callsign. It would not take my callsign with out putting in a password. I used the hsmm like the other password. well now I can access the status page but not the setup page. I have tried every combination of everything with no luck. Is there something I am missing? Sounds easy enough. Exactly what am I logging into to reach this file? I am unable to put the router in SAFE MODE and unable to log into the router itself. Is there another way into the software?

You are probably not following the directions found here to the T. Instead of typing, "setpasswd abc", you will need to type, "cat /etc/httpd.conf". Also, instead of waiting for the DMZ LED to illuminate before you hold the reset button to make the DMZ starts blinking, try a continual press-and-release of the reset button. I have found that the second method works more reliably than the first one mentioned. |

My next idea was to tftp the software again (with the [as yet still unknown, but expected difficulties]) of Window8.1, and not changing the paswrd.
That still might not have worked; I seem to recall that it was compulsory to change the
password.

All fixed now. I had not exactly followed the instructions. :-( I had used my Linux experience to use the "passwd" command, instead of "setpasswd". The curious thing is that httpd.conf had "root/hsmm" in one, and "root/HSMM" in the other.
Maybe whatever I did to the /etc/passwd file had stopped the hsmm system from working.
John, KG4VHV: You do have to get into the safe mode. Power off; power on ; the power LED flickers, wait for the DMZ LED to come on then push the reset button in the back a few times.(Be ready to do this before you power up the WRT). The DMZ LED should pulse. Then set your PC IP address to 192.168.1.2, and Telnet (use Putty?) to connect to 192.168.1.1 . Type "setpasswd hsmm" and you are done. Power off; change your PC back to use DHCP on the WRT.

At last finaly! I was not fallowing the instructions and yes I was. Mistake 1 was that in Windows 7 telnet has to be installed for it to work(DOOP) and the second was that I wall setting my Ip address in the computer but after doing it a couple of times with the flustration of the telnet I instead put 1.1. instead of 1.2. After I got these two things straight it went really well. I now have a working nod. Now to try to get the rest of the group going on this. Thanks 73 John |
