I was wondering is there anyone out there using Microtik Groove or Metal routers with the new Ubiquiti software ?

I am a little loss as to why the Mikrotik Series of routers cannot be used?

Does the firmware on the routers have to be changed? If so, is the source code available?

Since the Mikrotik is such a versatile router series, and supports different frequency bands via plug-in wireless modules, it would seem an excellent choice?

I have several units and would be willing to do some experimentation.

You could probably make it work. Flashing an operating system on MicroTik is actually fairly complicated compared to Ubiquiti hardware. Versatility and plug in modules may call for a re-write if the interface in some places as the GUI makes some assumptions about devices. If you wanted to experiment the basic instructions are: Flash OpenWrt Onto the device (made complicated by Microtik boot loader). This can't be made "easy" (as compared to Ubiquiti) so will always be an "Advanced Users" deployment. Install OLSRD (not do hard once you get this part) Configure OLSRD to match BBHN settings. This would get you a node that works on BBHN networks.

Pay attention to what Conrad posted.

You're on your own for the install process.  It will take some configuration and installation.  Maybe even some coding and compilation.  Then you'll have a node that can talk to a BBHN mesh, but it won't have the user interface that BBHN has, unless you port that part of the code as well.

i.e. It won't be the full BBHN platform.

Most people won't have the skills to do the port themselves without a lot of learning.

There are lots of hardware platforms that CAN be made to talk to BBHN mesh, but you have to understand linux, networks, and software to figure out how to make it work.

There are also some hardware platforms that probably won't work because of different processors or hardware with proprietary device drivers that won't do what BBHN needs, such as ad hoc mode.

I'm not part of the development team, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm also easily confused.

Oops, I forgot to answer completely.  The BBHN source code is available.  I believe some of the device device drivers for some of the hardware is proprietary to the manufacturers.

So as I understand it: 1. Flash the unit with OpenWrt 2. Install OLSRd I think that some clarification is needed from my part. I have several devices that are Mikrotik, but since it a software operating system, it also runs on other platforms. According to the openWrt website, the PC Engine hardware supports openWrt, and that is what I was going to use. It seems pretty straight forward. I assume there is nothing special in the BroadbandHamnet firmware other than the configuration? Eric

Oh BTW. I was hoping to use the Mikrotik directly as is, as it does support MESH operation. However, their MESH implementation seems to be proprietary and not compatible with BroadbandHamnet?

Eric?

Is there further update on the experiments with Microtik devices?

Hi ! Mikrotik is something I´ve been thinking about looking into for a while, but had not yet had the time :) My intention is to look into this during my vacation....

We have use RB411 and RB112 Mikrotik with our HamNET-Mesh firmware on 2362 and 2697 Mhz without any problems. Working very good on 5.6 Ghz too.

I emailed Microtik directly an they are interested in what we do with the system and in helping us make it work on their equipment. They want to know how it works and how we use it. I would also like to know where to download the functioning firmware SP2ONG mentioned.

Fixed part of the multi-post.

As soon as I can get my hands on a Microtik device, I'll start looking at how I can port BBHN over to the device.

Hi,

Miktorik use RouterOS which closed OS and you can not add own compiled packages like OLSRD etc.

In RouterOS you can use Mesh but is own solution by Mikrotik which is not compatible with others and in this way you must use only Mikrotik in you local network. Because we are ham radio and like make experiments with different topology, protocols solution in Miktorik for us is not good :-)

What is solution? and how to use OLSRD, Batman, Babel etc. Because in our country we can by used RB411, RB112 where price is about 12 $, I have replaced RouterOS with OpenWRT where I have modified driver ATH5K to work on hamradio bandplan and we can use RB411/RB433/RB112 on frequency between 2.3 Ghz and 2.48 Ghz and 5.6 Ghz in hamradio bandplan with WIFI card CM9, WMIA-123AG/E WMIA-165AG/E.

I  tried use Metrouter but I am not remember what kind of problems I had with metarouter on RouterOS

How to replace RouterOS with OpenWRT you can find on internet like:

https://blog.poettner.de/2011/05/27/openwrt-trunk-on-mikrotik-routerboard-411750/

After this you can use any protocols to make experiments with Mesh like OLSRD, Batman, BABEL etc

In Poland we use at current following hardware:

Ubiquiti M2/M5

Ubiquiti Nanostation2 and Nanostation5 and Loco version

TPlink like WR740, WA901, etc all with Atheros radio chipset

TPLink WA521G working nice with internal 12 dBi panel antenna and max power about 28 dBm

Mikrotik RB411/433, RB 112

At current we use OLSRD but I have test other Mesh protocol BABEL which look very promising compare to OLSRD.

You can find more information about BABEL:

http://www.pps.univ-paris-diderot.fr/~jch/software/babel/

Babel is available in OpenWRT

PS. SM7I and KF6PVT I have sned via email link to FW for mikrotik

Hi, I know that there is firmware for some of the Ubiquiti equipment, has anyone looked into running it on the Ubiquiti Litestation 2? 73 Blake VE9TUX

You can find information on www page

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/ubiquiti/nanostation

where is information that you can upload firmware on LiteStation2:

"LiteStation 2 - uses openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-squashfs.bin . Steps for flashing are the same as NanoStation2"

for example:

https://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09/atheros/generic/

https://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09/atheros/generic/openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-squashfs.bin
