I am adding the USB option to a WRT54G V2 as outlined by K5KTF.  When it gets to the part on installing the drivers/sw for the USB ports I notice he is displaying the boot process, etc.  How is this being done on the router?  Is there a specific port or something to connect to to monitor what is essentially the console.

The command dmesg will show you the kernel messages generated during the last boot cycle.
