Sorry for the newb question. Yell

I'm starting to get interested in HSMM-MESH so I started hunting for a router to tinker with.

I read on the starter page:

All hardware versions of the WRT54GL work fine.

I read in the hardware pdf:

WRT54GL 1.0 – 1.1

Higher numbered versions of each model are not compatible with HSMM firmware.

So are all WRT54GLs good or not? Shopping on Ebay I find this one :

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GL 2.4GHz With SpeedBooster

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Linksys-Wireless-G-Broadband-Router-WRT54GL-2-4GHz-With-SpeedBooster-/261221632281?pt=COMP_EN_Routers&hash=item3cd205c919

Good or bad? Do I have to write each seller and ask for the version number?

Jim

The model number WRT54GL with SpeedBooster does not exist. If the unit has SpeedBoost it is a WRT54GS. The seller must give a real model number. There is no way to tell from the incorrect advertisment what the model number is. If it is a WRT54GL of any version it is good. WRT54GS is good up to version 4. Again the seller has combined two model numbers to creat a model number that does not exist. -Glenn, KD5MFW

Thanks Glenn, I will look for another WRT54GL, that's what I needed to know for step 1. Jim

Amazon and Newegg have the GLs new for $50 right now. You can find them used for less. Every model of the GL works fine. They can be converted in minutes to HSMM-MESH.

I put one on the air yesterday in 30 minutes. Another should arrive today and I will have that on the air....at least in my house for now :-)

Hi, 'Nother Noob here.... I read that the GL has Liknsys firmware configuration that MAY limit it's Flash to 3/4s of the actual installed hardware. My GL is V1.1 which may imply that this isn't a problem. My question is: Should I reflash to a current version of Linksys firmware and then re-load HSMM to get proper performance from the router? As it is I got the router on the air and will have a couple more show up in a day or 2. If nothi9ne else, I can always talk to myself.... a lot more than I do now. From the "SHOP" guidefor GL V1.1 : Detachable antennas. As of August, 2009, this version was shipping with firmware revision 4.30.11. This pre-loaded firmware allows the user to upload a 4 MB firmware image, whereas the pre-loaded firmware on version 1.0 limited the image to 3 MB. Firmware version 4.30.15 is now available for both hardware versions. Fully supported by Tomato, OpenWrt, and DD-WRT. John at KB0NE-H1

Yes, version 1.0 has less memory than the current version 1.1 of the GL router. If possible get the 1.1 version, but 1.0 will still work.

When in doubt as to the version number ask for the serial number then look it up in the charts.
