I acquired a couple of new WRT54G-RG routers which were produced by Cisco/Linksys for Rogers "Talkspot" - these routers have 32 Meg of ram installed instead of the usual 16 Meg. During the firmware upgrade, I noticed that when DD-WRT was loaded, it recognized that there was 32 Meg of RAM, but when I installed the HSMM-Mesh firmware, it appears that only 16 Meg are being recognized. Has anyone succeeded in having the software recognize all 32 Meg of memory in these ex-Rogers routers?

By the way, the serial number on both units I have begins with CDF11 which doesn't fit the pattern for identifying versions of the WRT54G series of routers (it uses a 12VDC switching pwr module), and the circuit board looks pretty much identical to my WRT54GL (the CPU is a Broadcom 5352).

Al, These routers sound just like the T-Mobile version but for Rogers up there in Canadia :); what we'd call WRT54G-TM which are relabeled WRT54GS's. I'd recommended using the GS version of the firmware. -Rusty-

Thanks for the info Rusty. Next question is how can I upgrade this WRT54G-RG router from the G mesh firmware I am using to the GS firmware. When I try it through Administration/Firmware Upgrade, I get the message "Firmware cannot be updated, the uploaded file is not recognized". Maybe there is a hardware code in the firmware that is checked? Or possibly I would need to re-install dd-wrt and then upgrade to the GS mesh firmware from there? 73

I misspoke -- all of the files (except the .trx) are the same firmware but with different headers so they'd be recognized by the Linksys loader. Once you've loaded the BBHN firmware you need only load the .trx files. Nonetheless, the firmware is the same and should recognize the two different memory configs. My question is: what makes you think that the unit is recognizing only 16-Meg of RAM? The status page on the router of my 32-Mg GS box reports this under "Free Space" flash = 3292 KB /tmp = 14840 KB memory = 10380 KB Give or take a few hundred KB because I have a number of different packages loaded on my unit. A GL reports something akin to: flash = 308 KB /tmp = 6992 KB memory = 1396 KB

Rusty, you are right! I was interpreting the info wrongly - didn't think of comparing the numbers on my GL with the RG units. On the RG routers, I have flash=4336KB, /temp=15164KB and memory=15544KB. On my GL router they are flash=688KB, /tmp=7068KB and memory=2368KB. Glad to have that sorted out, thanks & 73

Came across a similar problem when I was trying to get a WRT54G-RG going. No problem getting the ddt-wrt firmware installed. Just would not load the bin in the next step. Tried all kinds of things, 30/30/30, just would not take the upload. The SSID would not change so to me that verified the software did not upload. When I manually reset the router, it would not ask me for the newly assigned username/password, it would just log me in directly so something is messed.

Then reading a response in this thread regarding FireFox, so I do remember something similar happening to me in another application so, after a few days with the router off, I opened up Internet Explorer logged in to ddt-wrt using the correct new username/password I assigned, and proceeded to upload the GS version of the bin. Immediately I saw a difference in the response, the 299s timer was counting down and in the background you could see the progress bar actually progressing. This all looked like it suppose to look when updating. Sure enough, leaving the router alone it did reset on it's and monitoring the SSID with a wifi analyser, "MeshNode" appeared instead of" ddt-wrt" and this of course it was it should be.

So as much as we like FireFox, IE still has it's place. That's all the problem was.
