I'm looking to set a node up -- I could set one up in San Jose and perhaps in Cupertino. Is there much of a point? Would I be able to reach anyone else in the area, or would I just be placing my dots on the map in the hopes of enticing someone to fill in some of the open spaces? :)

You are probably a "founding node" in your area. Those posting here in this Bay area Forum are you best bet at the moment. They are posting to the forums, at least. There are many who do not contact us, so we cannot notify them of others that are close to them. Thanks for your help.

Did you guys every get some nodes up and running in Cupertino and San Jose? Any chance you could post the locations on the map?
I am planning to do the same in Saratoga & Fremont.

Hi, KJ6ZGJ. My name is Aaron KK6INS. KH2SR and I have been working on putting up a node in Fremont and Saratoga. The one in Saratoga has one 16db gain directional antenna, one 8.5 db gain omni and eventually a second 15db gain directional antenna. for now my node in Fremont will only have omni directional antennas. However I plan on eventually adding two directional ones as well. As you can see on the map, we now have our nodes on the air in Fremont and Saratoga. KH2SR has also convinced VE4AAI/W6 to setup a node in Cupertino. We have just started promoting BBHN/HSMM-MESH to some ham radio clubs around the greater SF Bay Area. We have already had a very positive response from several groups and individuals showing interest in setting up nodes to help build a BBHN/HSMM-MESH Bay Area Network.
If you are still willing to put a few nodes on the air in San Jose that would be awesome! If you also happen to know some other hams or clubs in the bay area that would be interested in participating, please direct them to this website so they can create accounts, join the conversation, and with any luck, set up nodes of their own. Feel free to follow/join the conversation on this forum thread as well: http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-11-sfbay-area/topic-787-saratoga-fremont-san-jose-mesh-network-plans.html

I am new, and not yet set up (am searching for a suitable Linksys router), but I would like to put a node on my rooftop in San Jose, near 880 and The Alameda (37deg 20'43" N, 121deg 55'46" W). There are lots of trees around me, and it would be difficult to get my antennas up very high, but it looks as if I have a fairly clear shot WNW from me, toward Mission Peak. Currently deciding whether to go omnidirectional, high-gain, or both. Peter AA6FI |

Hi Peter,
A good place to find linksys routers is on Craigslist, Ebay, & Amazon. When you get your node on the air be sure to post it to the map. I recommend both omni and directional for your antenna setup. Also make sure you talk your ham friends and local ham club into putting up nodes as well. Good luck & 73! James - KH2SR |

Hi Dave,
Glad to hear you are considering setting up some nodes at your location. My node up up about 15-20 feet on a fiberglass mast and I have turned it to the west to try to link with your node. You will likely need a higher gain directional antenna if you hope to connect to anyones nodes.
I also highly recommend that you list your nodes location on the official map on this site. Here is the link: ( http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/googlemapped-mesh-nodes.html ). This will allow myself and other hams to more accurately aim our antennas at your node, which is vital if we hope to link our nodes. I believe you are to the west of me up the hill. If that is correct then you are in a prime position to link to various nodes all over the South bay area. Ideally you would want to end up with multiple nodes, each aiming directional antennas at different nodes in the valley below.
Hope this info helps,
73!

At this point, I could only realistically set up a setup in San Jose (@37.25192,-121.812908). I have the WRT router, is this still the best option? What would I want to do in the way of antennas? -- Ben (now K6BHB)

I'm thinking of buying this one for my node:
http://www.amazon.com/Yagi-Antenna-2-4GHz-17dBi-Angle/dp/B008Z4I7WQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1440835332&sr=1-2&keywords=17dbi+wifi+antenna
It is female N-type connector then running LMR-400 coax to my router and living with the loss instead of mounting the WRT54G on the mast.

here is alink of what we got going in the east bay.
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zeFvnG-PTOyw.kjdpLK9wJkkc
most of our nodes are Ubiquity, and we will soon move most of the links to the -2 ch.
Im looking for support $$$ and support to develop a back bone up and down the bay. The USS hornet NB6GC has a great location. Looking for locations with some height too. The Baynet is interested too.
