Eager to hear if this thing will support hsmm or if it'll need it's own version.

Discussions have actually already surfaced a couple months back on this router.

It will require a new build.

The new Linksys (ARM based) appears to be a much closer cousin to the Ubiquiti gear (without the ruggedness) than it is to the older WRT54g's which are based on the MIPS/Broadcom architecture.

Retail online is about $350. But it is encouraging that they are acknowledging the open source market.
