Hello-

I realize that it is popular and cheap to deploy a HSMM-Net with 2.4 gear, but is there anyone experimenting with the 5.8 Channels available?  Hams have access to the band at 5650 to 5925 mHz.  They offer much more bandwidth and are non-overlapping.  They are channels:

Channel 132: 5660 mHz (DFS Channel, do not use.  This is a RADAR channel for Doppler Systems)

Channel 132: 5680 mHz (DFS Channel, do not use.  This is a RADAR channel for Doppler Systems)

Channel 132: 5700 mHz (DFS Channel, do not use.  This is a RADAR channel for Doppler Systems)

Channel 149: 5745 mHz

Channel 153: 5765 mHz

Channel 157: 5785 mHz

Channel 161: 5805 mHz

Channel 165: 5825 mHz

In regular 802.11a/n wireless, we have the ability to channel bond and create a 40 mHz channel.  This would offer even more throughput.  Also, using the 5.8 band allows for multi-channel RF links, allowing the entire RF link no loss in throughput.  Is anyone experimenting with these capabilities?

I see no one has replied. I am also interested in this idea. I have a business that focuses on installing 802.11ac routers. Just think if we could do 80-160 Mhz bandwidth at 1.3Gbps using hsmm-mesh. That is what I would like to pursue. Let me know your thoughts. De KD4GJM Bill.

I believe that the biggest stopper for HSMM (both in 2.4G and higher bands) is the lack of real line of site between most of the hams. And if 2.4GHz can somehow accomodate some foliage, anything higher than that is very strict about having clear view. Moreover, because of higher signal attenuation, you can not really use the omnidirectional antennas on highter bands, so each link has to be point-to-point, which means, no random plug and play scenario possible, but that is the whole idea of the mesh. So provided every ham has access to a really tall tower and you can engineer the network, you can achieve a really beautiful net, otherwise, let's first get 2.4GHz running... My 2 cents. Anthony

Yeah, I agree. In all outdoor mesh networks the biggest limiting factor is line of sight. And, since we typically don't all have towers we at least have the access to amplifiers. Maybe the functionality of selectable bands and multi-channel backbone links could be written into the firmware for some compatible dual band home AP/routers. But, you could hook a 2.4 router LAN port together with a 5.8 router LAN port and use the 5.8 channels. Just some ideas for a brainstorming session. Matt
