Hardware: WRT54G v.3 and MacBook (OS X-10.10.5).

I followed the instructions and an informative online videos, but ran into trouble at the stage after the software update was uploaded. I then needed to access the menu that setup my node name (the final step). When I tried to call the menu up using "localnode:8080, it failed -- no response.

I succeeded working around the localnode problem (on my Mac) by calling up SYSTEM PREFERENCE: NETWORK : ADVANCED : TCP/IP and copying down the router ID that had been assigned.  I used <routerID>:8080 (i.e., 172.27.0.1:8080) to call the menu. It worked, and I succeeded to assign a (callsign) node name, password, and trigger a reboot.

After completing all aspects of the installation, I am still unable to localnode:8080.  I can only get into the menu with the current routerID, calling <routerID>:8080.

I hope this helps minimize someone's frustration out there ...  Tongue out

Usually, a quick CAT5 disconnect/reconnect and/or a Browser clear cache works. (in addition to making sure that your wireless interface is disabled)

On a closely related topic... can the wifi actually be turned off at a node when not needed? Even 1dB is too much. I'm using WRT54G and G's exclusively at the moment. I've poked around the Perl code and found the settings menu and went right up to 250 milliwatts, and down to -20dB but where the shutoff code is eludes me. I'm assuming it's elsewhere in the firmware that the Perl code builds on? Basically I want to completely turn off / disable the wifi on my tunnel server and leave it all running on the client box which is connected via a DTDlink cable. My work around for now is a 72 ohm resistor plug at the antenna and 1dB settings but there's still signal leakage between boxes just from the exposed IC's. Any ideas?

AB9U, yes it can be turned off. All the information you need concerning that can be found here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/wireless You either need to be fimiliar with the command line enviroment, or use a program like WinSCP to modify the required file. Basically, add the line "disabled 1" to the /etc/config/wireless file (and dotted-config directories if you want it to persist across config changes).

Thanks for the information. I'm familiar with WinSCP and use it for other mods already - I just needed to know where to look for this function. I've got most of the firmware printed out now including the ddWRT code for each mesh node and other types of routers also. I think the "off" feature would be a useful option for a future release.
