Our Vision for the Golden Horseshoe Network

This network will hopefully encompass the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario. It will include The Greater Toronto Area, and surrounding regions.  It will also include the Region Pee( in Peel County) , Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, and Niagara Region, as well as other areas surrounding the City of Toronto such as York Region, Scarborough, and Durham County, and hopefully even further.

This Network is an HSMM ( High Speed Multi Media) service over a WiFi backbone operating under the guidelines of the Amateur Radio Service.

Currently active in this proposed network is the Peel Mesh.

Peel Mesh is a Broadband Hamnet collaboration of the Peel Amateur Radio Club (PARC) and the Mississauga Amateur Radio Club (MARC) , both situated in the County of Peel in Ontario Canada.

We currently in Peel we have three “backbone” sites.  One site is located at VE3PRC/R, and this site is currently hosting 3 WiFi nodes operating at 2.4GHZ.

The other 2 sites are hosted at VE3MIS/R and VE3MIS-Station.  Each of these sites are also hosting 3 HSMM nodes.

Jointly, on the Peel Mesh we currently have 5 residential sites. Several more residential sites have been surveyed and will hopfully join the mesh when the good weather breaks in the spring.

Oakville has recently joined our mesh and has a backbone at their VE3OAK/R site, and this is connected to the Peel Mesh over a 14Km Wifi Link.

The Peel Mesh has a few active cams.

Most notable though at this time is that as of late February 2015 we now have several applications including an email service, a Web Page, Voip service ( X-Lite), and an IRC (text) chat room service ( NetTalk).

We hope these exciting applications encourage you to join the Golden Horseshoe Network

Please be sure to visit our display booth at Hamex in Brampton on March 28

It looks like I'm going to miss Ham-ex, so I'll miss your booth. Watch for our emissaries from the Hamilton Amateur Radio Club; I've asked them to visit on my behalf.

Are there any discussions going on about tunneling? Now that it's dead simple to set up, seems like a decent way to attach our many 'island' nets to the larger mesh. In Hamilton, we have a decent hub at our repeater site, but no members live close enough to connect via RF. You have a better line of sight across the bay to our site than any of us have. Ironic, eh?

I have a BBHN 3.1 tunnel server set up at my home QTH with unlimited broadband just itching for a few connections. Given that I live in an area that prevents me from connecting anywhere via RF, tunneling is an attractive feature that I'd like to explore.

I'm interested in getting connected to the network from my location in North Burlington. I don't think I have line of sight to Oakville location, so for the short term I may want to look at tunneling in if that is offered. I have 2 to 3 nodes set up in my house for testing, as well as a WiFi hotspot, and an Asterisk deployment running over my mesh network. Hoping Burlington comes online soon so I can direct connect.

Over New Years and into early January 2016 we had communications with the group in Niagara (VE3XNC - Brad ) .  We now have a very successful 65km link between ve3mis/r mesh site and ve3plf/r in fonthill.

We currently have (at last nights count) 32 nodes on the Golden Horseshoe Mesh.

This is extremely exciting and we look forward to bringing Oakville back online and also look forward to expanding into Burlington, Hamilton, and Georgetown.  Hopefully Toronto will come onboard as well.
