While digging around on Ebay I ran across these.  Linksys PaP2T-NA   The device is a 2 port SIP VOIP Phone Adapter  VOIP Gateway  Claims to let you run an analog phone and a Fax machine on 1 Box.   It looks like something similar to the Gulfstream device.   They are running around $40.00  Would this run like the gulfstream and just need to be plugged in at each station that need phone access or would a server needed to also  be added to the mesh.   Having a backup phone and fax would be nice at a Hospital or EOC.

Interested in the answer to this one as well, it looks to be the same box that my Vonage runs off of and can be purchased for very cheap. This would be a great cost saving way to get going on a mesh PBX.

These are what are called SIP to FXS converters, they provide an FXS port to plug a phone into and send the rest via sip to another sip device.

You should reffer to the manual for more details but generally you MAY be able to dial by IP address but you will usually want a phone server (Asterisk) so you can dial easier, use extensions, have voice mail, etc.

You only need one voip server in an area and everyone can feed off of it as long as they are on the same mesh network.

Thanks for the info Conrad. This VoIP on hamnet is starting to become more clear now. After a bit of research agrandstream single port ata looks to be the same of not cheaper and no worries about locked down hardware.

I ordered a grandstream on amazon and received a branded VOIP device. It was not advertised as such and was around $25. Be careful as these branded devices have costs supplemented and found for as low as $5. There are 'unlock' steps available and if anyone chooses to follow this route, be aware that if you allow the device out-of-box to connect to the internet, the default password is reset. There doesn't appear to be known unlock steps at this point...and I returned it. We have several of these HT701 grandstream ATAs on our mesh here in Southern CA with a beagleboard Astrisk PBX hosted by WA2KWR. We are looking at the Cisco CP-7940G full desktop IP phones for $35 + $12.50 ship--like 400x count available on ebay for this price right now. Joe AE6XE
