Hello All,

Just wondering if there is any standard format for SSID's on the HSMM-Mesh node's? I remember back in the packet radio days we would assign certain -#'s to your call based on what it was for. I see on some of the pages that some user's are setting up as a -100 or some are just using a call. Looking for ideas or comments on this. I ask because at this time I've got about 10 users getting ready to setup their nodes here in the Sarasota Florida area and we would just like to be uniform somewhat in the ways others are programming their SSID's.

Thanks in advance for you input,

I dont think anyone has standardized anything along that route yet. I started mine at -100 because -5 is my packet digi, -9 my truck -10 my RMS station, and I figured since this was going to bbe an order of magnitude higher in freq, to start at -100. But I have also been using words, like my -50foot up my 50 foot pushup pole, -USB for my USB modded node. Really, its anything goes. WWhatever makes life easier I guess. Y'all are welcome to come up with your own standards if you like. 10 guys ready to deploy? WOW! GREAT! Send me the lat/lons and node names and Ill add them to http://hsmm-mesh.org/googlemapped-mesh-nodes.html (I know.. I have been nagging as bad as my wife to get locations for the map... sorry :-) ) 73 and good luck ! Jim K5KTF

Hi Jim, Thanks for the information. I've been playing with this for about a year or so but gave up as it was just my brother (KD4UBZ) and I. Now, it seems to have gotten some legs in this area and is starting to grow (I hope). It's been the topic on the nets from two different clubs. So, I dug out the ol' setup and getting back into it. Like I said in the other post, we have about 10 hams that want to play right now. I'm sure if those of us on the ground floor build a basic starting system here others will follow suit. I've advised all of them to come here and register so we can maybe in the future have our own area topic section once we get this HSMM-Mesh ball rolling here. As for the -100 SSID on the nodes, that looks like a good start for me to work with. I ran a full service multi port BBS back in the day and the SSID's was a big part of setting up the BBS and gateways and such. Anyway. I'll keep all informed here as the system gets going. I'll also get the GPS numbers for you from each user that sets up a node so you can map that. Thanks for the help. 73's de Eric...KD4MZM...

Great! I hope you guys get alot working. As one great guy here in Austin always says, "Few will help build the rails, but once the tracks are laid, everyone will want to jump on and ride". When you get me LatLon, I prefer XX.XXXXXXX format, as that plugs straight into the flat-file. If I get XX* XX' XX" or XX* XX.XXX, then I have to convert. Im hoping I will have a form up soon that people can plug in themselves and it will add to it. 73 and GL! KTF

Be careful, the usual SSID for a mesh node is HSMM-MESH. If you do something different, like change the channel, run encryption, etc. it's requested that you change the SSID for your mesh so that others that run the default settings won't enter your mesh. It's been recommended that the SSID be changed by appending something like your callsign or your name ; just so your mesh can be identified as being different. WiFi SSIDs can be upto 32-characters long. Node names, on the other hand, can be pretty much anything and can use the old packet usage of SSID (Secondary Station ID) in the naming of the nodes. Many usually do something simple like "callsign-###", "callsign-AP#, or "callsign-Node#". Since my mesh nodes are scattered in the house I've done "callsign-room" like "ae5ae-kitchen", "ae5ae-garage", "ae5ae-attic" and the like. -Rusty-

Hello All, Rusty, I think I mis-spoke when I asked about the ID's for SSID's. I have all mine set to HSMM-MESH like it is suppose to be. On the other hand, I was asking about the Node Name, (my mistake). K5KTF, yep, it's really starting to roll here in my area. Got a lot of hams really wanting to come on board with this project. We have a few hamfests and tailgates coming up and they are looking for the right routers to use. As soon as they start getting online I'll have them post here. I have a few routers here, so I may have to pass them out to help get the area covered more until they get their own node setup. I see a bunch on ebay at a fair price so some deals can be found there too. We also have a couple of guys that want to put up a access point with a Linux box, so that should be fun. Anyway, I'll keep all up to date from this area (Sarasota, Florida). 73's de Eric...KD4MZM... Node...KD4MZM-100
