On the hsmm-mesh.org home page, there is a picture of a setup on a tripod. The URL of the pictures is: http://www.hsmm-mesh.org/images/Images1/portable_node_1.jpg Where was this tripod found? It looks like a great tripod for this type of setup, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Granted, I haven't searched very hard as I figured someone could provide the answer quickly in the forums. Thanks for the feed back. I have found the following tripods:
Easy UP. This looks very similar to the one pictured on this site.

On stage stands. I have one of these in front of me. They look really nice but I question the stability of them. Bump it hard enough and it will tip. The legs don't spread out as far as I would like.

With regards to tripods I was searching of all places Home Depot and found the following..

I can't imagine this being too bad a deal for 30 bucks this would be a pretty nice one to look at. I can see a way to increase stability by anchoring the tripod with a twist in leash anchor for a dog, the large screw in kind with say a short bungee. Any thoughts ? |

I've had success in potting 5' long, 1" dia galvanized pipe mast in a bucket partially filled with cement. For added stability I've screwed a tee fitting to the mast bottom to ensure it doesn't come out. You can also add a pipe union just above the level of the cement so the mast can be unscrewed from the bucket.
Then I mount the MESH node, solar panel, battery, and charge controller, all to the mast. BTW, the solar panel mount is comprised of another 1” tee fitting screwed to the top of the mast with two more short pieces of the similar pipe forming a mounting cross-member. This allows you to rotate and tilt the panel for optimal sun exposure.
All in all I have about $20 in it.

I would love to see a pic ! Also if you have a parts list that would great, I have toyed with the idea of making a portable node vs a static one simply as I do not have much for line of sight. I have also considered a mobile node as well and am looking at those options also.

Attached is a drawing of the node stand with all the parts identified. You'll also find a few photos.
I built this originally as a portability proof-of-concept for the San Diego HSMM-MESH Working Group initiative. I've transported and deployed it 7-8 times at various ARC meetings around San Diego county drumming up interest in the project. I wouldn't change it much.
If you decide to build one, I do have some other pointers:
- About half a bag of Quickrete should be enough. You can always add more if you find stability issues with wind and the amount of equipment you mount on the mast. Adding too much concrete just makes it harder to transport.
- The mast length should be limiited to what you can transport. You can add a connector (1" galvanized female-female union) mid-way so it'll break-down to a small package.
- Most antenna mounting hardware assumes 2" masts. I have found that these mounts work good enough on 1" pipe and 2" pipe is overkill for these devices... only adding weight and inconvenience to deployment.

There are a number of posts regarding solar charging on the site... I'm not an expert. I took the over-design approach and use a 24ah 12v battery, a 40-watt solar panel at 17 volts and run it through an inexpensive charge controller. Subjectively, the node has made it through 3 consecutive days of rainy weather and not failed.
