I was able to borrow 3 Ubiquity Rocket M2s from work, and easily flashed them with the HSMM firmware and set them up in a 3 node mesh, using small wifi antennas and low power to experiment and learn within the confines of my house.  I would like to experiment with adding an internet gateway to facilitate remote updates and limited routing of services over the internet, possibly linking 2 dislocated mesh networks together.

Since the M2 only has a single ethernet port, I haven't been able to find a way to configure it for WAN access.  I also looked at the possibility of connecting it to router, but can't find a way to add routes to the routing table.

Can anyone help me out or give me some ideas.  As I say, I'm exploring the realm of the possible here, just to see the capabilities. I was going to try this with a WRT54G router, but since support for those will be ending, I'd like to focus on the Ubiquity product.

Thanks for the help,

Jeremy

You need a 802.1Q VLAN capable external switch.

Here's a link to a great article by AE5CA - http://ae5ca.com/?p=49

FYI, I picked up a new Netgear GS105E 5-port switch off Amazon for around $50

Thanks, I'll see if I can find something at work that will do the trick. Do any of the settings on the radio need to be changed, or will this work with the default setup?

no changes needed on the node.

Just switch configuration for the vlans.

So I've got a switch and configured it as per AE5CAs instructions for a single node above. My configuration has Node1 connected to the switch, with an internet connection and a Raspberry Pi. Node2 is a stand alone repeater, and Node3 has a netbook connected. I can get to the internet from the Raspberry Pi, but not from any of the other nodes. I was under the assumption that any node that connected to the mesh would be able to access the internet. The proof of concept I'm trying to achieve is to have a computer connected to a node in the mesh, able to access a remote node with an internet connection, in order to use a radio in a remote shack across the internet (hopefully that makes sense). I would also like to white list certain websites such as this one to aid in reference and troubleshooting. I imagine this should be as simple as adding in some static routes or a gateway of last resort into the routing table, but I haven't found a way to do that. Is this possible?

It sounds like you have internet at node 1 and you want to get internet at node 2 and 3 through the mesh (wireless, no cat5).

On node 1 go into setup and select the internet gateway check box. Then node 2 and node 3 as well as anyone else that can connect to you mesh should have internet.

I generally do not like the use of the internet gateway feature in a largemesh. If you need it for a local function like this you may want to use a different said to prevent a larger mesh from connecting.
